I am trying to import music files into my videos but it seems with WMM that
it doesn't support many file types. My audio files seem to have a .cda
extension but need to be .wav or .mp3 for example. Does anyone have any
advice or suggestions to get round this.

.cda is the natural cd format, not many, if any, video apps will import this
file type.
I wouldn't use mp3, as it doesn't work well with MM.
Use WAV.
Try cdex, a free app to convert your cd to wav. There is a link on this
page.

most computers can go directly from whatever is playing on the computer into
a narration file, a high quality stereo one.... see the Importing Source
