When I capture Hi8 video as a .wmv file (via a Canopus
ADVC100) the video is split into clips during the post
capture processing. However, when I capture the same
video as a .avi file the video is never split into clips -
-even with the 'split' option selected. Also, after the
capture is completed, right clicking and selecting
the 'split' option does not work either --it goes through
the motions of creating clips, but the "Clips Created"
count remains at 0.

What is the reason for the different reactions to the two
different file types?

Is there a way to have clips created without having to
manually split the video?

The PC is a 2.4GHz, with 256MB, the system drive (c) is
45GB and the video is being captured/edited on a 140GB
drive (e).

See the section about Auto Clip creation on the Importing Source Files...
Video Clips page of my website.

The section you refer to is actually where I found out
about the '2nd' opportunity to create clips (eg: right
clicking).

As I understand your explanation, about how MM2
determines where to split into clips, the process should
work even though my original video is analog (with the
Canpous unit & 1394 card generating a functionally
equivalent DV-AVI data stream). The PC seems to consider
the data stream as if it were indeed coming from a
Digital camcorder --WinXP recognizes it as a "AVC
Compliant DV Tape Recorder/Player" aka "Digital camera".

Is there something that I am missing? Should I be able
to have MM2 auto-generate clips?

It seems that you are bringing in your analog tape as a digital video file,
which has no timecode (or breaks in timecode to establish markers).

If you keep the clips in DV-AVI form, MM2 won't do auto clip detection. You
would have to save it as a high quality WMV and then it would do the optical
splitting of the WMV file which has no markers.

I'm sure the section can be better written, as I understand it better
myself.

Is this a flaw (or at least an inconsistency) in MM2? If
I capture the analog video, using the setup described, as
a WMV file it does indeed have clips auto-created.
However if I capture the same analog video, using the
setup described, as a DV-AVI file it does not have clips
auto-created.

It would seem that the data from the Canopus/1394 setup
does include timecode/marker information, yet MM2 DV-AVI
format does not utilize the information. Is this
correct??

I can see how you might think of it as an inconsistency. I'd be interested
in any suggested rewording of the info on my website to make things clearer.
Thanks
