I've used MM2 quite a few times and produced a number of videos with it.
However, it appears to have stopped working properly.

I can import a video file fine and it brings up the thumbnail, but when I
click on the thumbnail to preview it, it wont bring the file up in the
preview window. What will happen is that it will put the file name above the
preview window, then that file name will flicker. The program doesn't
completely seize, but I cannot try other clips without closing the program.
It only appears to be the preview window that seizes.

I have tried closing the program, rebooting my computer, fiddling with the
codecs. I also tried a system restore which worked for about an hour, then it
stopped working again. In that time the only thing I did was import lots of
clips into MM and update Windows and virus programs. I've (hopefully) got rid
of all the codecs I have put on in the past month, but still it isn't playing
fair.

Anybody got any ideas?

What filetype is the video file your trying to import?

The file types are mostly avi files which I have used in MM2.1 many times
before without a problem. The problem did seem to occur when I imported an
mpg file. The file imported ok and even played back in MM a few times, so I
doubt that is the cause. I have removed the file from MM collections anyway,
but it did not sort the problem.

Can an mpg file still cause a problem even when it has been removed from the
collections and the program restarted and computer rebooted?

No I don't see how it could.
There is something else wrong but I am unsure as to where to turn next other
than reinstalling SP2 and WMM but that is generally a last resort kind of
fix. Maybe John or pj will have a better suggestion than that one.

That's one good thing about Movie Maker version 2.

We can install, reinstall, uninstall any number of times, without meddling
with the system software much.

BTW, I have not used version 2.1, but what are the extra features available
in that?

Your symptoms still suggest a codec issue... try the full manual search for
the .ax files and see what you have compared to the problem ones on the
Problem Solving > Crashes and Hangs page of my website.... and be sure to
have your normally hidden folders 'unhidden'.

I agree it does sound like a codec issue, hence I deleted recent codecs and
fiddled with others.

But, while reading one persons solution to a similar problem, they suggested
downloading "k-lite mega codec pack". I decided to try it, and so far the
clips are previewing again without a problem.

Thanks heaps for all your help guys, I just hope MM keeps playing fair.

I guess a missing or needed codec is a better issue than a problem one....

It has decided to stop working again this morning. I have done nothing to
affect it since last night. I am completely baffled as to why it wont work
now when it did last night. I had only just opened the program, so had not
even imported any clips, just opened the project I was doing yesterday.

Anyone know what might be happening?

With spyware and adware being in the limelight lately, and causing real
problems on some systems... and some MM2 users reporting resolution of
issues by cleaning up their computers, how are you on that score?

My newsletter #34, now online in the archives at www.windowsmoviemakers.net
is a guide to going through your system and giving it a tune-up in the area
of sypware/adware....

When something routinely and automatically comes back or disappears... it's
time to consider it.

I will definitely look into that and get back to you with what I find. I have
done a complete sytem virus check, just incase! But that came back clear, so
that rules out a virus, but as I say, I will check for spy ware that has got
through my spy ware program.

Thanks

I have read your newsletter and done everything it suggests. But MM is no
different. The only thing I have found to work at all is the codec pack which
gives a temporary fix. But when MM goes silly again, I have to uninstall the
codec pack, then reinstall it.

I have checked the order of codecs on my computer between MM working and MM
not working and there is no change. MM stopped working earlier today when I
closed the program and reopened it, yet closing and opening the program does
not always affect MM in this way.

Re: Clip preview problem in MM 2.1 by tt3

The vast majority of the files which, although off the net, I have used
before and are not new files. The one that is more likely to cause a problem,
also off the net, will play in all my media programs and is fine apart from
one hiccup similar to a processor stutter, but this never causes the video to
stop.

Does anyone know of a way of checking a file for corruption? I have had a
look on the net but not found a good way of checking the file.

With the project I finally managed to produce in MM by re-installing the
codecs each time, I have put into Sony Vegas and Vegas has no problem at all
with the file.

Thanks once again for your assistance, I hope we can just get to the bottom
of this, might help someone else.

Hello,

Can I suggest you go to www.videohelp.com/convert and after completing the
wizard download the programs it suggests. Your objective would be to
convert any/all of your files to one common standard, probably DV-AVI. Take
note that there are two forms of DV-AVI known as Type 1 and....yep Type 2.

Doing a conversion will remove the uncertainly about file types and
compatibility.
