The playback of clips and timeline come out very choppy
which makes it difficult to edit with more precision.
Does anyone know of any reasons for this?

I'm running a PIII 850 with 256 MB RAM.

Thanks

The performance of playback depends on a number of things, free memory, how
fast or fragmented your hard drive is, how big your input files are
(typically lower bitrate files well require less CPU time than higher
quality higher bitrate files), how complicated your timeline is.

Papa John has put together a useful page on hardware setup on his website
which you may want to check out for further info.

Hope this helps
