I have a new Panasonic Digital Video cam. When i play the recorded footage
straight from the camera to the tele it has a really sharp image but when i
capture it using movie maker the quality decreases dramatically. I have
noticed if i burn the footage to a dvd it increases a little but is still
nowhere near as sharp as on the camera. Can anyone help? Im using Firewire
and my computers really good, i dont know what to do!

Are you capturing in DV AVI format ?

And how are you determining that the quality is reduced when captured from
Movie maker? Do you play the saved DV AVI file or just look it in Movie
maker's preview window. MM shows low resolution unless you save the movie
back using File->Save Movie File...

Hello there,

If Movie Maker is making a hash of things can I suggest you try the free
and very highly regarded program called WinDV. You can get the latest
version from http://windv.mourek.cz/

The program has just two functions...Capture DV-AVI and Send back to
camera. It is generally accepted that it does a better job than Movie Maker
in difficult conditions.

Once you have captured your video you can import it to your favourite
program. The file is DV-AVI and is acceptable to most video editing as well
as DVD Authoring programs.

To properly test the movie from the pc, capture some, and then send it back
out to the mini-dv tape in the camera and watch on the tv again, the quality
should be identical if you capture/export as a dv-avi file.
There are many other factors that affect the quality as seen on the pc, such
as the camcorder video is interlaced and tv's show interlaced pictures, pc's
don't.
When you make a dvd it compresses the movie more, and there are several
factors which affect quality here, the app you use, the bitrate used.....
right down to the make of disc.
