I have been using Windows MM2 to try to capture DV from a Canon MVX200i. The
camera is connected to the PC via an IEEE 1394 cable.

When running the vidoe capture wizrd I can't get the program to capture from
the tape automatically.

I select 'Capture from video device ' in the movie task pane. The wizard
starts but does not show the 'Video Capture Device' page; although the top of
the next page shows the device as being a Canon DV device. I enter a name for
the clip and choose a save to location. I then select 'Next' and come to the
video settings page and choose the DV-AVI format (although I have tried this
with other settings as well). I then select 'Next' and proceed to the
'Capture Video' page. For some reason I can't get to the 'Capture Method'
page to select 'Capture the entire tape automatically'.

I can capture manually on the capture video capture page so the video can be
transferred between the camera and the PC.

I have read the camera manuals, WMM2 help both on the PC and online and
can't find a solution. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

I should add that I have 30Gb of free HDD space and am running the camera in
playback (VCR) mode. When manually capturing, I can't control the camera/tape
from the PC.

I'm having the same problem. Following the instructions step-by-step, and we
never get to a Capture Method page so I can click Capture entire page
automatically. Figured these might be old instructions for a previous
version or something? Anyone???

I did find, however, that while on the Capture Video Page you can take the
check OUT of the Create clips when wizard finishes box and it will capture
the entire video, BUT you need to sit and wait while the camera plays the
whole tape. I was hoping that the Capture Entire Video automatically would
be faster than that.

Has anyone been able to get this to work as per the instructions???

Which version of Mm are you using, and how are you connected to the pc.

For MM2.1 and firewire connected cam,

Open movie maker, connect cam by firewire and in vcr/playback position.
Click on capture from video device
This opens video capture wizard. Name file and choose location > Next
Choose file type, I'd go for dv-avi as its the best quality > Next
Here I get capture the entire tape automatically or captuer parts of the
tape manually, and also show preview > Next
In this window, you have the start and stop buttons for capturing manually
if that's what you've chosen and creat clips/mute speakers/captuer time
limit options.

Whichever way you apture, it always captures in real time, so 5 minutes
takes 5 minutes to capture.
Manual capture means you start capture and tehn press stop when you want it
to. You can then search for a ne position on the tape using the controls
under the preview window, and then press start capture again, etc etc.

Graham,

Thanks for the reply.

In the About Windows Movie Maker box it says Microsoft Windows Movie Maker
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519:Service Pack 2), then
Windows Movie Maker version 2.1.4026.0. So, I'm assuming I have MM2.1...
It's running on Windows XP Professional.

It looks like I'm definitely missing the Capture Method page. I walked
through your instructions and once I select the file type and click next, I'm
sent directly to the page with the start/stop buttons and create
clips/mute/capture timer limit options -- never given the opportunity to
capture entire tape or parts of tape.

Another thing I noticed, was on the screen where I am to select the file
type, the option you suggest of dv-avi is grayed out -- I cannot select it.
I looked that up in the help and it says it is only selectable if you are
capturing from a dv device. However, I am capturing from a dv device -- a
Sony DCR-HC20 Digital Video Camera Recorder. So, I don't understand why the
dv-avi option would be grayed out. I wonder if that is also keeping me from
getting the Capture Method screen?

Oh, and one more thing that may be notable: I am connecting via USB and not
firewire. I don't have a firewire cable for this device.

I have the same version - fully updated. I too have followed those
instructions. I can get it to work on my laptop but not on my PC so I
understand the process and steps to follow. I connect with a firewire cable
on both laptop and pc.

Is this a hardware problem with the firewaire card in my PC? If so, how can
I tell?

Thanks for your responses and feedback.

Sandy, you're problem is using USB2, you need to get a firewire card and
cable.

Check out this page, which gives many things to try, including how to check
the firewire card. One thing to bear in mind though, is that the card can
check out ok, but still be faulty - if that makes sense :(

I think that may be your problem. I get the same result with my JVC
GR-D72US. The camcorder manual implies that you can capture video by
either USB or firewire, but whenever I try USB I get the same result
you are noting. Switch to firewire and it will probably start working.
