When I try to import video from the Windows Media Center recorded TV folder
I get an error message like this:

[K:\recorded tv\Breakfast.dvr-ms could not be imported. Unspecified error]

I can import files with other extensions from the same folder e.g. .mpg,
.avi but not .dvr-ms. Why?

I know other people can do this but - why can't I? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help...

Malcolm H

Sorry I meant to say I can't import *.dvr-ms video files to Windows Movie
Maker from the Windows MediaCenter 'recorded TV' folder. In fact I can't
import these files from any folder!

My guess is the files are copy protected.

Not so I'm afraid Bob. I have tried with a variety of programme material
recorded from various channels with the same result. My son has a similar
setup and successfully imported various program clips to WMM and edited
them. I believe that copy protected material produces a different error
message stating the reason for import failure.

Yes we both have exactly the same version of Windows Movie Maker as
follows:

Version 6.0 (build 6001: Service pack 1)

Version 6.0.6000.16386

The above info was taken from 'About Windows Movie Maker'

Check my website's Import Movie Source Files > Video > Recorded TV page.

dvr-ms files typically need conversion in XP, but import to Movie Maker 6 on
Vista Home Premium and Ultimate systems.

Has anybody other Home Premium user reading this thread successfully

Very interesting web pages PapaJohn. Your information seems to confirm that
I should be able to import dvr-ms files into WMM V6 with Vista Home Premium.

Unfortunately I still don't know why it doesn't work for me!

No, both of those should work for dvr-ms files.

I have a freshly installed Vista Ultimate SP1 system.... just checked and
found MM6 can import and use the 3 sample recorded TV files that come with
the system.

For a fresh recording, I ran into some issues which all seemed to be due to
my trying to use the file before I had fully stopped the recording session.

No it has never worked but looking at PapaJohn's post (just received) it
occurs to me that I have only tried to import short clips not complete
recordings. I will now experiment...

There are a couple of entries in the Event Viewer which are timed at about
the same time that I was trying to do an import.
Unfortunately thay mean nothing to me. How about anbody else? They are
copied below:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the
IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005. This is often caused by
incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

Operation:
Gathering Writer Data

Writer Class Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220}
Writer Name: System Writer
Writer Instance ID: {6b7e765f-7325-445e-ba40-580c18466dbe
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Event Info: ERROR: SqmApiWrapper.TimerRecord failed; Win32 GetLastError
returned 10000105

I think I am out of my depth!

Unfortunately, I don't think either of those have anything to do with your
problem.

Have you installed any 3rd party DVD viewing/authoring/editing software that
may have mucked up the built-in decoders?

Only Pinnacle Studio and Nero Showtime. I don't think Pinnacle is the
problem because my son has a similar setup to mine (with Pinnacle) and he
can successfully edit .dvr-ms file with WMM.

I suppose I could try uninstalling Nero Showtime?
