When I build a movie using Windows Movie Maker or other movie authoring
programs I am unable to print the movie on to my JVC GR-DVF31.
I am able capture video from my camcorder wonderfully.
I am connected via Firewire and windows recognizes my device fine.
I am running Windows XP SP1
I have check and made sure my BIOS is up-to-date, and I downloaded the
latest chipset drivers and everything and I am still running into problems.
Your Help is appreciated.

Hi all
Are you sure your camcorder is able to record from the FireWire input? Not all
are able to do so. Sometimes, it may be "forced".

Hi MattO --

The good news is that the documentation on the JVC GR-DVF31 says it supports
both DV-in and DV-out....so it should work.

Can you tell us exactly what behavior you are seeing? For example:

The camera simply does not get recognized by MM as a device you send DV
video (You can't get beyond choosing "DV Camera" in the "Save Movie
Wizard".)
or
MM appropriately detects the device, but bails out during rendering the file
(You get to the page in the "Save Movie Wizard" with the progress bar, but
you bail sometime during the *first* 50% of the progress.)
or
MM appropriately detects the device, but when it comes time to send that
file back to tape it bails out (You get to the page in the "Save Movie
Wizard" with the progress bar, but you bail sometime during the *last* 50%
of the progress.)

In the mean time, I'll look around and see if I can get my hands on one of
these devices in-house.

Thanks!

Yes, I know that this used to work before I rebuilt my computer and upgraded
from 2k to XP.
Thanks,

The DV Camera appears to be detected fine by windows and by MM as I am able
to connect and record from the DV device to the computer/MM. I just can't
print back to the DV Camera.

Just to test it I added two pictures from the sample pics in XP (Water
Lillies and Winter) and then clicked on the "Send to DV camera" link. This
said, I don't belive my video is too complex or too large (I have 29 GB free
space on my SATA HD).
I have used this DV camera and fire wire and fire wire card before on my old
Win2k PC before my processor fried/died, and it worked fine except that my pc
was not fast enough to handle the video capture from the DV device. Since
then I have upgraded to a new MoBo, Processor, RAM, and WinXP.

When I attempt to make a movie, MM starts the rendering process and I get to
the page in the "Save Movie Wizard" with the progress bar, but it bails out
around 48% of the progress and states "Your complete movie was not recorded
successfully to tape. The DV device is not responding. Unplug the divece,
plug it again, and then start the Save Movie Wizard." I have followed its
advise, but have not suceeded.
When it does reach the 48% point I hear the DV device kick into gear to get
the ready to recieve the data, then I see the first picture in the video
apear on the LCD screen and then it get scrambled and starts to flicker and
then it simply goes to the camera's default blue screen stating that it is
doing a DV.In function and that it is running 48kHz/Full on the sound and
running in SP mode. It will stay on this screen for quite sometime even
though windows MM has come back and told me that the process has failed.

Thanks,
Matt

I haven't heard from anyone for a while... Any luck on duplicating my problem
or finding or guessing a fix?

Hello there,

Have you tried the WinDV utility? Its very highly regarded...its
function is to either capture or send to a DV camera the DV-AVI files. You
can get it from the Utilities section of my web site.

Best Wishes.....John Kelly

Hi Matt --

I did manage to get my hands on a JVC GR-DVF31, and was able to successful
send video back to the device on a clean XPSP2 machine, so I think we can
safely rule out the camera as the problem.

John's suggestion is the best next step to determining the problem. Use
Movie Maker to publish the your video to a DV-AVI file and confirm that
there's nothing wrong with the published output. Then grab a copy of a third
party utility like WinDV or DIVO and see if you can send the file back to
the camera successfully using them. Both WinDV and DIVO are DShow-based
(just like MM), so if you still experience problems sending your file, we
can rule out MM as the problem and start looking at your system files.

WinDV: http://windv.mourek.cz/
DIVO: http://www.carr-engineering.com/dvio.htm

Hope this helps!
