I tried to burn a DVD and got a failure.
I used a Maxell DVD+RW "Up to 4X, 4.7GB 2 hrs."

I tried again using Maxell DVD-R "Up to 8X, 4.7GB 2 hrs."
This was successful.

I this because of the "4X" vs "8X?" or did it have something to do with the
+RW vs -R?
I asked Nero but it takes a week or two for them to answer....

Thanks, Doug

Hi Doug,
Could be either one although but burning SLOWER shouldn't cause the problem,
burning FASTER easily could.
Some DVD Burners don't work with all DVD formats. My old one, for instance,
would only burn to -R and -RW disks but didn't work with +R and +RW. New
burners work with both but some older burners don't.

At what point did the process "fail"?
If it was a compatibilty issue with either DVD+ or DVD-
and if your burner was only compatible one type, it just
would not have recognised the blank disk at all, you
would have received prompts to insert a disk?
Did burning commence with the DVD+Rw that failed?
Did you receive any error messages from your Nero software?
Did you change anything in the process when burning disks? -
the obvious one being with the disk that "failed", if you mean
it won't playback on your standalone DVD player - did you finalize?
It could also be a firmware issue?

The failure happened immediatly when it began the burn process.

I did not receive an "insert disk" prompt. Of course the disk was in the
burner at the beginning of the process - several minutes before the burn
function began.

It did switch - according to the window - to the burning process and then
failed immediately.
I received the message that the burn failed. That's about all it said.

No, I did not change anything. I just tried the same functions again but
using the DVD-R disk - which was successful.

If so, why? and what can I do to see if that's a problem?

Thanks,
Doug

I've only had this burner since last summer so I assume that it's a fairly
late model. I had my PC built at Fry's Electronics and this burner is one
which they recommended.

The firmware could easily have been outdated.
To find out you need to go to the manufacturers website and see if they have
a newer firmware download. Usually they will have a utility on the site or
that's downloadable to see if the firmware version is the latest or if there
is an updated version available.
If you do need to update your firmware be sure there is NO DISK in the drive
when you do the upgrade or your burner may be damaged.

Thanks,
I found a website on the burner that I went to and updated the firmware.
I'll see if that makes a difference.
