I routinely import Mini-DV from my camera to Movie Maker as .avi files
and then transfer the modified movie back to the camera. I then dump
the result directly to my DVD recorder---(much quicker than burning on
the computer). I would like to do the same thing with some of my
older Hi-8 video tapes but MM doesn't seem to give me the option
importing analog video as .avi files---only as Windows Media. This
is wierd, because I can then save my modified .wmv movie to the
computer as .avi (but with loss of quality). Any suggestions as to
how I might get my Hi-8 tapes back onto Mini-DV?

Does your mini dv cvamcorder have analogue inputs? If so, you could maybe
use the minidv as a pass through device or you may need to record to the
mini dv tape then capture to pc.
In my experience the recordings made by household dvd recorders are poor in
comparison to those that you can attain using your pc.
For anything that you want to watch at a much later date I'd opt for quality
and time on my pc over the speed of the dvd recorder.

When I copy old Hi-8 tapes to PC, I use Digital8 camcorder, which have
possibility, to play analog tapes (it was produced a few years when it start
their carrier). Camcorder is connected via IEEE1394 (DV Out) but in option
it have "play analog tape". So PC see it as digital and record in *.avi
format. Quality - only little less than D8 tapes
