I have in the past been able to capture mini-DV using firewire through my
Audigy sound card. Now I can't seem to do this on the PC. I installed the
SP2 hotfix, and still cannot capture. However, my firewire works with my
ipod and my external hard drive. I get the "bing" connection noise and
transfers work. I went into regedit and set the speed to 3 from 2.

Neither my Canopus ADVC100 or the Sony mini-DV camcorder are recognized (no
"bing" noise).

Any suggestions of what to try next?

For further clarification, this entire post refers entirely to Firewire; not
in any way to USB.

Also, all connections were direct to the Audigy firewire port; no daisy
chaining was involved with any connection discussed in the question.

Check for any updates from creative.

I have updated every possible driver from Microsoft, Creative, and ATI (my
video card company).

What kind of conditions could lead to "frying" a firewire connection (this
remains a possibility I suppose, that somehow I have a hardware problem).

Connecting disconnecting whilst everything is on and it's not been pushed in
poperly/straight. Blip in electricity supply. Can you check any other
firewire devices to see if the cable and port do work?

I had the same problem. I could not recognize my TRV17 in either Movie Maker
or even in Adobe Premiere. Searched everywhere for a solution. Could find
none. Uninstalled SP2 and everything works perfect. So much for Microsofts
inprovements. Uninstall SP2 and I am sure you will find all perfect again.
