    - HP dc5000 not recognized as Video Capture Device I have a VCR connected to my hp dvd movie writer dc5000 connected to my WinXP SP2 PC. VCR connected via s-video and audio (red & white). I can capture video & audio through the dc5000 with the ArcSoft ShowBiz software that came with the dc5000. I can capture video (no audio yet) through the dc5000 with Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.     - no video capture ok,kids,I've seen this one before.I have a vaio pcvrs720g, brand new,jvc grd33us vid cam.Using wmm,u-lead ,dvgate,nero6,or roxio I get the same thing.Computer recognizes cam,any software will operate cam functions,up to and including capture.But,will not capture video.Different error messages with different softwares,but all basically say:no video capture,check source and computer configuration.Have connected with firewire and i-link cables and ports,same result.Have my old dell computer,it works fine.(just too slow).Camera even starts,shows vid on cam view screen,but nothing in preview window on computer,no counter action,and no capture.Anyone got a clue.By the way,talked to Sony,said it's under warranty,ship it to repair station.Biiig help!     - "insufficient memory" error when saving While editing various video clips I ran into this "insufficient memory" error when trying to save my project. I don't know why I'm getting this message, and if it refers to my RAM or hard drive space. I have a gig of RAM and well over 25 gigs of storage on my hard drive, so I don't understand how it's insufficient. With movie maker open, the computer is only using about 550mb of RAM.     - Capture to clips Hi I run the wizard to capture manually from a camara. I start and stop recording several times before hitting the finish button. The result is only one clip. Any idea of why.     - chopping a bit off the end of a video If I recorded a .wmv using MM2.1 and then imported that file back into MM2.1 and split off the last minute of the video and saved the result using exactly the same video profile. Am I right in assuming that there would be no loss of quality whatsoever because the program would be intelligent enough to spot that it's simply doing a trim operation and doesn't need to re-encode (and degrade the quality further) ? I'm tempted to think this isn't the case because doing this operation can take 20 minutes on a 30 minute video recorded (and being re-saved) at 500kbps. Before that I used Windows Media Encoder 7 and then 8. I'm now looking at getting a portable media center and need to know the exact version of the files I've made.     - Recording my project problems I need help also! I've only been using MovieMaker a short while, but seemed to have a good idea what was going on. I made a few movies from pictures that I uploaded from my pc and turned into movies with music. However, now I am using the same photos and same music but am unable to record to CD. The project records the first 2/3 of the movie just fine, but during the last 1/3 of the movie the screen goes black with no pictures. The music continues to play just no pictures.     - Problems saving to CD I need help also! I've only been using MovieMaker a short while, but seemed to have a handle on it when making the first couple of movies.     - no cd in drive I have made a video on my WMM. Pictures, video and audio is on this. I know this was asked before, however, I have tried making a cd, and it goes thru most of the process with wizard. Then I get the message no CD in Drive. I know the cd burner works because I burn other music or videos. That is done from CD to CD, not from computer to CD. Also it asks if I want to save to Computer. If I open up my videos in WMM and I view the collection, doesn't that mean that it is saved in my computer.     - DV-AVI (Pal) -- AVI files have no meta-data fields!! I have movies saved in DV-AVI (PAL) because that is the best quality WMM allows for. Unfortunately AVI files do not have any fields for met-data input, nothing editable . How can I add information or fields to AVI files, is there a program available to do that, or something from the group that invented the AVI standard. I have tried putting information in the properties tab in WMM, but this does not show up on the outputted file. I thought about saving the file as a 'High quality video (PAL)', which is WMV (VBR), but this would egrade the quality. So if AVI cannot have fields, why not and how do I convert to WMV lossless?     - Splitting Finished DV-AVI PRoject So I saved my project to disk, 13 GB , and then used MYDVD to get to a disk. Everything fine so far. But now I want to take my 13gb DV-AVI clip and save it to Multiple DVD's (4.7) with out compressing anymore. Is there a program that will split this into 3 parts, without any parts being dependent on the others.     - DVD-RAM import I have a Panasonic DMR-E85H DVD recorder that can record on DVD-RAM media. On my computer I can play the DVD-RAM with PowerDVD. When I look at the disc content I see a file called VR_MOVIE.VRO, and after changing the file extension to MPG I can play the file in Media Player. My problem is when I try to import this file in Movie Maker. I get this error message: "T:\TV\VR_MOVIE.mpg could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from". Do I need permission from the copyright owner beforehand? Even if I don't make any money from showing it, there is some shade of gray there. It could be interpreted as being used as a means for personal gain. For example, generating traffic on my Web site. I could lure you to my site because you may like a particular song. Once there I could propagate my message or advertise some other product or service. Just wondering;. I've poured through the U.S. Copyright and not being a lawyer, it's all Greek to me. WHAT IS COPYRIGHT? Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (title 17, U.S. Code) to the authors of "original works of authorship," including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. This protection is available to both published and unpublished works. Section 106 of the 1976 Copyright Act generally gives the owner of copyright the exclusive right to do and to authorize others to do the following: · To reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords; · To prepare derivative works based upon the work; · To distribute copies or phonorecords of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending; · To perform the work publicly, in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and motion pictures and other audiovisual works; · To display the copyrighted work publicly, in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and pictorial, graphic, or sculptural works, including the individual images of a motion picture or other audiovisual work; and · In the case of sound recordings, to perform the work publicly by means of a digital audio transmission. In addition, certain authors of works of visual art have the rights of attribution and integrity as described in section 106A of the 1976 Copyright Act. For further information, request Circular 40, "Copyright Registration for Works of the Visual Arts." It is illegal for anyone to violate any of the rights provided by the copyright law to the owner of copyright. These rights, however, are not unlimited in scope. Sections 107 through 121 of the 1976 Copyright Act establish limitations on these rights. In some cases, these limitations are specified exemptions from copyright liability. One major limitation is the doctrine of "fair use," which is given a statutory basis in section 107 of the 1976 Copyright Act. In other instances, the limitation takes the form of a "compulsory license" under which certain limited uses of copyrighted works are permitted upon payment of specified royalties and compliance with statutory conditions. For further information about the limitations of any of these rights, consult the copyright law or write to the Copyright Office. WHAT WORKS ARE PROTECTED? Copyright protects "original works of authorship" that are fixed in a tangible form of expression. The fixation need not be directly perceptible so long as it may be communicated with the aid of a machine or device. Copyrightable works include the following categories: 1. literary works; 2. musical works, including any accompanying words 3. dramatic works, including any accompanying music 4. pantomimes and choreographic works 5. pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works 6. motion pictures and other audiovisual works 7. sound recordings 8. architectural works Use of the notice may be important because it informs the public that the work is protected by copyright, identifies the copyright owner, and shows the year of first publication. Furthermore, in the event that a work is infringed, if a proper notice of copyright appears on the published copy or copies to which a defendant in a copyright infringement suit had access, then no weight shall be given to such a defendant's interposition of a defense based on innocent infringement in mitigation of actual or statutory damages, except as provided in section 504(c)(2) of the copyright law. Innocent infringement occurs when the infringer did not realize that the work was protected. The use of the copyright notice is the responsibility of the copyright owner and does not require advance permission from, or registration with, the Copyright Office. Form of Notice for Visually Perceptible Copies The notice for visually perceptible copies should contain all the following three elements: 1. The symbol © (the letter C in a circle), or the word "Copyright," or the abbreviation "Copr."; and 2. The year of first publication of the work. In the case of compilations or derivative works incorporating previously published material, the year date of first publication of the compilation or derivative work is sufficient. The year date may be omitted where a pictorial, graphic, or sculptural work, with accompanying textual matter, if any, is reproduced in or on greeting cards, postcards, stationery, jewelry, dolls, toys, or any useful article; and 3. The name of the owner of copyright in the work, or an abbreviation by which the name can be recognized, or a generally known alternative designation of the owner. Example: © 2002 John Doe The "C in a circle" notice is used only on "visually perceptible copies." Certain kinds of works--for example, musical, dramatic, and literary works--may be fixed not in "copies" but by means of sound in an audio recording. Since audio recordings such as audio tapes and phonograph disks are "phonorecords" and not "copies," the "C in a circle" notice is not used to indicate protection of the underlying musical, dramatic, or literary work that is recorded. Form of Notice for Phonorecords of Sound Recordings* * Sound recordings are defined in the law as "works that result from the fixation of a series of musical, spoken, or other sounds, but not including the sounds accompanying a motion picture or other audiovisual work." Common examples include recordings of music, drama, or lectures. A sound recording is not the same as a phonorecord. A phonorecord is the physical object in which works of authorship are embodied. The word "phonorecord" includes cassette tapes, CDs, LPs, 45 r. p. m. disks, as well as other formats.     - import from moviemaker to photostory 3 I am a very newbie. Can you import from moviemaker to p3? As a comment to MS, I don't understand why you need 2 programs to do the most basic functions (specifically pan/zoom or make titles as separate frames, and of course save to DVD). Why hasn't Microsoft added pan/zoom and DVD functionality to MM2? Will they soon?     - runtime error - pure virtual function call Looking at previous posts in this thread, I'm guessing "runtime error" could have a variety of causes. My problem is this: When trying to save a particular movie back to DV camera and it gets to 33%, 14 min remaining and hangs, but doesn't crash. Windows task manager says Movie Maker is still running. After cancelling I get this cryptic message: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime error R6025 pure virtual funtion call" I have been able to save this movie to CD, reimport it from CD into MM2, then save it to my camera! I have also been able to save a small test 'movie' straight from MM2 to camera; so I'm guessing the size/complexity of my problem movie is part of the problem - it's only 10 min long but in AVI format with lots of clips, transitions, & music added - so a biggish file. I'm using WinXP prof, MM2, SP2; I think this is the first movie I've done since replacing my CPU & motherboard, but the small test movie worked. I still have lots of memory avail so I'm confused.     - Movie file became corrupted Well, I imported video from my camcorder, saved it to my computer as an AVI file and everything worked out great. It worked fine, but now when I try to play it, it "skips," like a CD thats scratched would. I downloaded an audio/video analyzer called G-Spot and it said that my movie file is corrupted. I don't know how this happened, it worked fine for the longest time, and then almost outta the blue its been "sabotaged." A useful tool is VirtualDub. You can find links to it with a dogpile or
google search or find it in the tools section of videohelp.com.

I use virtualdub to remove audio as wav (edit audio in another app), strip
audio from an avi (import video in Animation:Master for rotoscope), or
convert a misbehaving avi file for an import into my editor. It has a lot
of uses.
