On my XP Home SP2 computer,I saved a bunch of short videos as .avi files
after editing them in MM2. Using a Ulead program, I burned a DVD
program that worked out well. I can't however view the base .avi videos
on my computer using Windows Media Player 10. I thought that WMP was
supposed to support .avi files, but I just get a blue box when I try. I
haven't the vaguest idea how codecs work or where they're stored, so I'm
hopelessly lost.........not unusual for me.

Since you rendered videos in .AVI format using WMM, the codec must be on your
computer and working .

Open WMP10, go to "tools>options>file types". Put a tick beside (.....avi).

If that doesn't work, try installing WMP10 again. Do not un-install WMP10,
just install a new copy right over the old one.

BTDT Movie played after reinstall ONCE! Then back to a plain, empty
box. Crawler at the bottom says it's playing, but nada. Same clip
plays fine if imported back to MM2, but won't play im WMP10. Any other
suggestions anyone?

Another thing I notice is that if I use the cursor to move the slider,
I can get the picture portion of the file each time I advance it. Strange!

It sounds like an indexing problem with the AVI.
Since you already have a working DVD with the movie on it I suggest, for
computer playback purposes, that you render the project again in Movie Maker
but this time save it as a High Quality NTSC file. This will play just as
well in Media Player as the DV-AVI file "Should have" but with a
significantly smaller filesize.

Thanks. I can play the DVD through WMP (with an added encoder), or the
AVI,s thru MM2 or a couple or ULead programs, so there really is no
problem watching the videos. I'm uspset/confused that WMP won't do what
it's supposed to do. Just a fussy oldster wanting things to work the
way they should.
