A friend has a good version of WMediaPlayer which she wants to keep, and a
defective one with no sound. When I looked in the list of programs which can
be uninstalled, WMP wasn't there. I tried to look for the uninstall
function by pressing the right button of my mouse, there is none. Can I
just delete it? Or is there something else I can do.

No, don't just delete the program files, you'll enter a world of pain.

In control panel Add/Remove programs, there's a checkbox top right
"Show Updates". Media player 11 (and possibly 10) only get listed if
that's checked - there are specific rollback instructions for WMP11
which has additional components installed : This page has the details
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx#RollingbacktoapreviousversionofthePlayer

The key question though would be "under what circumstances is there no
sound" ? EG Can she play CDs and hear them ? How about DVDs ? Or is it
only online video with mono audio (for example) ? It may not actually
be bust at all - WMP10 had a fiendishly disguised Mute button to the
left of the volume slider, which was hard to tell if it was on or off.

HTH
