When you click on the audio file, and open with Windows Media Player (Version 9, windows xp, sp2)you get message: "Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file.     - Variable bitrate MP3 files Is there any downside to variable bitrate encoding of MP3 files (other than the extra CPU to record/play them)?     - Library dissapeared and now I cannot add to library or share media Ive encountered some strange issues with WMP11 (on XP) over the past 2 weeks and Im hoping there's someone out there that can help. The problem started with my playlists disappearing from my library. When I noticed this I tried recreating them, but they would not save. A week or so later I noticed that all my music files were no longer in my library. While all this was happening my xbox could continue to see all the various media that was no longer "in" WMP. A few days ago I noticed that no new media was accessible from my Xbox and decided to try and troubleshoot the issue. I started by dropping and then re-adding my media folders to the monitored folders list. However, after hitting OK and then reopening the Add to Library dialog the montiored list was completely empty. I cannot get anything to "stick" in the list. Ive tried various fixes including deleting the WMP DB from %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player as suggested by KB 925718. I've also reinstalled WMP 11 multiple times. I even removed the Zune UI from my computer thinking they may competing for the same files even though they had been coexisting happily for months. At this point I can play music/movies by using File/open but for everything else (library media sharing etc) the WMP is useless. Im uncertain where to go from here. Thanks in Advance for your help.     - Audio / CPU problems I have had trouble playing audio on my computer, specifically mp3. When i try to play audio (wmplayer, vlc, winamp, so far) the player ramps up to 50+% of my CPU usage and trying to use any other applications makes the audio skip (it actually seems to get worse the longer i run it to the point that it seems to make itself skip). I had thought at first that it was the player but after trying 3 very different players i think it is the system itself.     - Microsoft falling, further and further behind Microsoft still insist on providing a maximum artwork resolution of 200x200 (and having the gaul to call it 'hi-resolution'). Worse, with WMP11 they apparently will downgrade any higher resolution artwork you manually add. For some considerably time Apple via the iTunes Store have been providing 600x600 artwork which is _nine_ times the resolution. Well now Microsoft are looking even more pathetic since Apple now offer 1425x1425 resolution artwork which equates to more than _fifty_ times the so called hi-resolution artwork offered by Microsoft. Note: iTunes 600x600 resolution was already the best of all the stores (Walmart and Amazon use 500x500). Now while this is perhaps an absurdly high resolution for its main uses (on an iPod screen or a computer display, or even a Full-HD 1080p TV), it is equally the case that Microsoft's offering of a paltry 200x200 pixels is barely adequate for even a Zune let alone using in Microsoft Media Center on a HDTV. Considering Microsoft have spent so much effort tarting up their graphics for Vista, disfiguring it with such mediocre artwork is a bizarre (but perhaps typical Microsoft) decision.     - Strange Connection Problem with new Denon 4308ci Hi Everyone, I have searched a variety of threads, but cannot find any quite like this problem I am having. I will try to make this as less confusing as possible... First...my equipment... PC1...(name is HTPC)....Vista 64...WMP11 version 11.0.6001.3869 (I think...doing this from memory, since I am at work right now) ....Wired ethernet to linksys wrt54g wireless router. PC2...(name is MediaPC)...Vista 64...WMP version 11.0.6001.7000 (just installed Vista SP1 to try to resolve this issue). Wireless connection to my router. Denon AVR 4308ci. wired to Linksys router...2 weeks old, firmware was just updated. The goal here is to have streaming audio from PC2...MediaPC.. since it is left on all the time. Second...the problem... Through the wired connection the Denon can see PC1 ...(HTPC) and plays music fine. PC2...MediaPC.. can see the Denon....log into its Web Page and configure with no problems...So the connection is good. But the Denon does not see PC2...Only PC1. As a test, I disconnected the wired cable from PC1 and used a wireless USB NIC. (Same as what I use on PC2) The Denon Still sees PC1 (MediaPC) But now it says "not authorized" ( I am thinking it sees a different MAC address somewhere...but not sure why this would make a difference) I put back the wired and disconnect the wireless...all is good again. More information.... PC2 can see PC1 in WMP11. But PC1 Does not see PC2 (same as the Denon does not) This makes me believe it is not a problem with the Denon, since PC1 cannot see PC2 either. I have been through every setting on both PC's to make sure sharing, network, etc. are the same. I have checked all firewall, and router (wireless settings). Without patting myself on the back too much...let me say...I just got my Microsoft MCSE 2008 upgrade from Windows server 2003 last week. And I am Cisco CCNA certified...So believe me when I say I have checked anything that I can think of. The only thing I have not done is directly wire PC2 to the router to bypass the wireless and see if that makes a difference. It is a hassle to move the PC2, but necessary at this point. I will do that tomorrow. So in summary...PC1 works fine when hard wired..when wireless is connected to PC1...Denon sees it but says "not authorized" The Denon does not see PC2 at all. So maybe this error message may give someone a clue on where WMP11 is looking? And Maybe by adding or authorizing a MAC address it will allow connection?     - Looking For A Strategy I have about 10,000 .wav files on an external drive and an Access2002 database that has all these .wav files recorded. Can I get these .wav files into WMP 11? a) Do the .wav files first need to be in a bunch of playlists?     - DRM? Hi I am running vista home premium and Mediaplayer 11 Having downloaded a music file (.wma) from Tesco.com downloads Mediaplayer refuses to play it. Tesco website help section refers me to a Microsoft article that tells me to re-name the DRM folder to DRMold before visiting their site at http//drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp.     - WMP, custom file extensions & seeking I really like WMP11 as my media player/server but unfortunately it's missing support for the fast becoming cross platform industry standard H.264/MP4 and could not stream my videos to my Xbox 360. Thankfully looking over MSDN I found that it was possible to introduce custom file formats into WMP and I was successful in creating a registry patch which can stream H.264/MP4/M4V & AAC/M4A to my Xbox 360 from WMP11. http://a8t8.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2518DD508BB713E8!156.entry With that out of the way although the primary purpose has been fulfilled I would like to improve on it if possible but here is where I have hit a brick wall. There are two outstanding minor issues that I would love to fix and better tie MPEG4 support into WMP if it is actually possible; 1) The length of audio/video for custom formats is not displayed in the library or during the now playing when you play something from the library. 2) Seeking is not supported (is that the right term?) where you can jump to any point in the video, fast forward/rewind etc when you play something from the library. But.. seeking will work if you open the MP4/M4V/M4A in WMP through explorer or through the File-Open menu in WMP or if the videos end up in the "Other Media" category in the library. The time length of the media file also sort of displays semi properly when you do this too though only for a brief moment if you jump to various points in the file it will display the time length. Why it partially works in one way and not through the other I have not been able to figure out at all & looking over MSDN and the registry I cannot locate anything that points me in the right direction. Ideally I would like to at least enable seeking for MP4/M4A/M4V if playing them through Windows Media Players own media library. (I have also looked pretty much at every WMP MPEG4 add-in pack and splitter, registry tweak that's out there and none have been able to overcome this.) Is it even possible for custom formats to be fully integrated into WMP's own library ? Thanks for any pointers or enlightenment anyone can share.     - Any way to tell WMP11 to write ID3v2 only, not ID3v1? Ok, this may seem like an odd request, but is there any way to tell WMP11 to write ID3v2 tags only, not ID3v1, when tagging MP3 files? Long story short, my mp3 player (TrekStor vibez) can play back LAME encoded MP3 files gaplessly with absolute perfection, but only if they don't contain any ID3v1 tags. I've been using Media Monkey to clean out the ID3v1 tags where necessary, but if I want to re-edit any tag data using WMP11, WMP adds back in ID3v1 data. Thx.     - xbox sharing - can see files, but not play them Win XP Pro SP2 Windows Media Player 11 xBox 360 (Dashboard version 2.0.6683.0) I've just downloaded and installed WMP 11. I go into Library -> Media Sharing. My xBox is listed. I select it, click "Allow" (default settings). On my xBox, I can now go into Media and select "HOME:Laptop" as a media source. Folders in WMP's default locations (ie: My Documents/My Pictures) are visible, as are the extra monitor folders on my external hard drive that I added to the Library. I can go into these and view file lists. I can list Albums and Genres of music: I can SEE all the stuff in my Library. However, I cannot view or play any files. It just hangs for a bit, trying to load it, and then I'll get the red-circle-with-line-through, or a cross for pics. I'm running Windows Firewall and I can see that the various TCP and UDP ports required for sharing are open. My router - a Thomson Speedtouch - is pretty much default. There aren't any firewall settings that I can see would interfere (and in any case this is all INSIDE the router firewall, right?) The xBox and PC are on the same subnet. My library has over 11,000 items in it - I've seen this mentioned as a possible cause? I've searched the newsgroups and google and either I'm missing something or this isn't common - most queries seem to involve the xBox not being able to see the PC at all. Can anyone suggest anything?     - WMP 11 brings up wrong CD data Been ripping CD's with WMP11 (Vista Ultimate PC) .. all working OK. However put in one CD (genuine not a home copy) and it brings up art work & track list for a totally different CD. Although if I click play it does play correct track. I have tried CD on an XP PC and the same issue. Initially I thought that there must be wrong data on CD ... however I then loaded iTUNES .. and brought up correct art work & track list ??? So somehow WMP 11 is getting wrong 'data' for this CD ? Not a big issue for i CD ... but would like to understand how/where WMP 111 actually gets it's art work & track list from, and can I correct it ... do I need to tell WMP to 're-learn' or something ?     - WMA Lossless to MP3 conversion Not strictly a WMP question, but where better to find people who know? I've ended with a lossless WMA file (because my CD was almost unreadable, and EAC extracted the track successfully). I'll keep the file for posterity, but I'd like also to convert it to 192kbps MP3 for my WMP11 library. I can't see a way of doing this in EAC, nor in CDEX, nor in WMP.     - removing dead song links from WMP 11 OK, I've Googled for a while now, and the best solution I've found for removing dead song links from the WMP library is to delete the library entries, and then rescan monitored folders ... basically building the library from scratch.     - WMP 11 playlist format I accidentally posted this question in the MAC forum and was hooted off the block. Here is where I should have put it, maybe. I recently bought a CD label maker that included a software package. It only allows importing WMP playlists in .asx, .wax, and .wvx formats. Windows Media Player 11 saves playlists in .wpl format. I assume previous versions of WMP used those old formats for playlists Can I just change the extension to .wax, or is there a conversion routine floating around to change .wpl to .wax? Thanks.     - Vista + uiMode="none" fullscreen issue Dear all, I am running into an issue with Vista I haven't with XP. I have an application that embed a WMP activex. When playing a video, the standard behavior (that works well on XP), is to be able to dblclick on video to enable fullscreen mode. However, on Vista, i am experiencing some trouble. Here is the pattern to reproduce the bug: * Start the video * Right click to make appear the contextual menu * Then try to double click on the video => the player stay in normal mode I am only able to reproduce this issue when: * UiMode is set to "none" (i have my own controls) * Autostart is set to false By setting the uiMode to "full" i don't have the bug. To avoid the problem, here is what i tried without results: * Use dblclick event to manually set fullscreen * Override Wndproc to catch double click * Set WindowsLessVideo to true A funny thing is by overriding wndproc or with registering to the wmp doubleclick event, I dont receive any notification over the video, but I receive it over the "black borders" on the top&bottom off the video. So expert, i have a couple of questions for you ;-) * Is the surface renderer different in uiMode=full and uiMode=none? * Can we pragmatically change the video renderer of WMP? * What exactly is the OcxState property? * Could anyone test my bug pattern and confirm that this is reproductable (or not)? * Do you have any idea how to avoid this bug?     - Scrolling to the end of a long list of albums Would whoever is in charge of the people who work on Media Player please instigate a rule that all developers *must* have at least 1,000 albums in their library and that they can only ever play/test the *last* dozen or so? That should get the problem fixed in a hurry.     - Unable to play audio on multimedia CD Hi All Apologies if this question has been asked before. I recently purchased a music CD. I took it home to load it onto my mp3 player (which I believe I'm perfectly entitled to do ?) only to find it's a multimedia CD and won't play the audio on the PC. On insertion the disc autoruns loads a splash screen with a single button which when clicked links to a website. If I stall the autorun with the shift key and explore the disc no audio files are visible. The CD plays OK on a normal audio player. I'm running XP2 SP2 fully updated, WMP11 fuuly updated and set to download codecs automatically. I appreciate this is possibly not a WMP issue but some sort of copy protection, which p****s me off as if I'd known I couldn't load it onto my MP3 player I'd have downloaded it directly.     - Movie playing but no sound I'm a novice! I've DL'd a movie and when using WMP10 it has no sound. I have checked all the codecs using GSpot and according to that they are fine.     - Sharing more than one Library in WMP11 Hi, I would be grateful for any help on this matter, I am truly at my wits end. I have a Vista PC with which I want to enable sharing with my xbox 360. On my vista PC, I have two user accounts. One for myself and one for my girlfriend. Despite both media libraries having sharing enabled, only my girlfriend's media library is visible on the xbox. Does anybody know why this is? I recently reinstalled vista and previous to this, only MY media library was shared with the xbox...it seems that the first library to be shared after the vista reinstall is the one that makes it through to the xbox... Perhaps it is a permissions thing? I previously used WMP11 on an XP Pro machine to share media to my Xbox and it always gave us the choice of which library to use when browsing our media on the Xbox. i.e. when I pressed X, I was presented with the following choice of media sources: Mediaserver: Dan Mediaserver: Lekki Does Vista Home Premium only allow media sharing with one user account or something? I assume it is a problem with WMP11 on my Vista machine as if I turn my old Xp machine on, the Xbox 360 still gives me the choice of media sources.     - Uncorrupted Cargo by Men at Work I just discovered that there is a patch of noise at offset 2:02 of track 1 of "Cargo" by "Men at work" (Dr Heckyll & Mr Jive). I have an original CBS CD, and no matter how I tried I couldn't get a clean audio file. In desperation, I downloaded a bittorrent copy of the album? and it has exactly the same noise 2:02 into track 1. Is there any way to get a clean copy of this track from somewhere? I wouldn't mind buying another copy of the CD if it had gone bad on me (that's just bad luck) but it seems that the CD was faulty from the day I bought it. I've had similar problems with Pat Metheny CD's (ECM records). ECM stonewalled me when I complained. If you have a track called "James" (it appears on at least two Metheny CD's) then listen carefully to it.     - WMP10 -- Sync always at 160kbps, regardless of settings For some reason, whenever I sync to my SD card devices, media player 10 always converts the WMA file to 160kbps. It used to do 192kbps, but after fiddling with the settings it seems to have gotten stuck at 160kpbs. This happens regardless of what the "Select quality level" slider under the "Quality" tab is set at. To make matters worse, I have recreated the same problem on another, separate PC.     - soundtrack too loud, no audible dialogue When playing DVD's in Media player v 11.0.5, I started having problems where the soundtrack is entirely too loud but the dialogue is so soft as to be almost completely inaudible. It is as if the software is muting the dialogue in each DVD. This occurs regardless of which DVD is played. It also occurs regardless of which speakers I route the sound through.     - No sound from Media 11 Last week I had a new motherboard Intel DP35DP with SigmaTel Audio on board. I cannot get Media Player to play any sound. I can get sound from everything else including Real Player, PowerDVD, Adobe Premier 2 video editing, even the Windows MP2 player I pick up from the Windows section in Explore but nothing from Media 11 (if I uninstall to my computer's original Media 9 I still get nothing.)     - 2nd post..WPM11/WinXP wav issue ive chased this off/on for a few days, reading here and other places. i recently had my user rights/name changed when i joined a domain, many programs had to be installed/reinstalled after that. i have no idea if that is connected w/ my problem. i get voicemail delivered to outlook from my home phone if someone leaves a message. i pretty much get something everyday. last week the .wav files quit playing. and i would get an error c00d11b1, if i uncheck the auto-download-codec, then i get the c00d109b telling me i have a bad codec, but i dont know which it is, how to tell? i tried re-install of wmp11, no luck. tried to remove it, to go back a version but never could get that it to remove. per the windows help, i checked the hardware & drivers and winxp said everything was fine today following another thread at free-codecs.com i reinstalled the IMA ADPCM and MS ADPCM codecs. no luck. i looked in my soundmax card folder and found a test.wav file that played fine. i looked in another folder and found a song.wav file that played fine. but the voicemail ones (even older versions for previous emails) wont play. something seems to be corrupted but i cant figure out what. i saw someone mention that their winamp worked but their wmp didnt. so i downloaded winamp 5.2 just now and it plays the .wav file fine. where do i go from here to fix wmp11, other than just use winamp? thanks. jim. I'm not short on disk space, but it seems pointless not compressing the data.     - Do You Use Auto Playlists ??? I had a debate with a buddy of mine on the usefulness of the Auto Playlist feature. I LOVE this feature because I can control my listening experience. For example, I have an auto playlist for music with a release year of 2008, my ratings is 4 or more stars, and the track hasn't been played in the last week. This way, I shuffle what I listen to and the same track doesn't get played too many times. My buddy thinks the auto playlist feature is hard to use and requires too much time to set up the data used with auto playlists (e.g., the Rating value). He creates a bunch of manual playlists and drags the songs he wants to each list. He said he has a list of music for when he studies, a playlist for walking on campus, a playlist for when he works out at the gym, etc. So, I am curious what other people think.     - Shortcut to Artist display I'm looking at an album (by Kate Rusby, as it happens) and I'd like to go to the display that shows me other albums that I have by the same artist. I have installed windows media player 11 on my pc. During xbox 360 setup I
get to a page that gives me and 8 digit number code for security that I need
to input during the setup on the pc. I don't know where to input this code
as there is no area that says setup. It says go to xbox.com/pcsetup and
input there with windows media player. I'm completely baffled by
this....Please help

The alarming reality of my connecting the two is that the code was never used.

I suppose that means I will simply have to enjoy my library in fear of
