I've just rebuilt my desktop and prior to this had painstakingly
ripped over 200 CD's to MP3 format.

However, when I try to browse those files now (they are stored on an
external HD) they are unreadable under DOS or by the library within
WMP11. I can see the files within Windows Explorer and if I copy the
files to My Documents\My Music they can be seen there.

Anyone got any sugestions on why this happening or what I can do to
get it working??

Thanks in advance!

Click Tools>Options
Library Tab>Monitor Folders
Advanced Options>Add
Then select your External Drive Music Folder

Thanks for the response!

I've already done that several times and WMP11 can see all my music
videos and films I have stored on the external drive but not the
music! :-(

Anyone got any other thoughts?? it's rather dull playing on the XBox
with out any music!!!

Could you define "rebuilt your desktop"?

How exactly are you trying to "browse" them? The player's file:open dialog
or ... ?

Had these files been deleted from your library at some point?

By saying I rebuilt my desktop, I actually mean reinstalled Windows XP
and related software.

I ripped a CD yesterday and that actually showed in the library and
within DOS, however the other files are still not showing within
either the WMP library or DOS.

All files are playable and are viewable from Windows Explorer, I'm at
a complete loss as to why this could be happening!!

Well after some playing with ownership and the like I have finally
found out what the cause of the issue is. All the folders have been
given a SYSTEM attribute, which means they cannot be seen. Once I
changed the attribute to non system it all worked.

Now I have to find a way of doign a mass convert on the files!!!

Glad you got that fixed. You said the existing files were ripped to
MP3 - what do you need to mass convert them to (and why ?)

Cheers - Neil
