I use a 3rd party program (MP3tag) to update the ID3 information on my
MP3 files because it can do several at once. I have about 300 files
that I recently ripped from CD that were missing the ID3 tag
information (technically, most of them had ID3 tags, but it was
ID3v2.4 which WMP does not appear to support). I re-tagged all of the
files with both ID3v2.3 (which WMP reads fine from my other MP3s) and
ID3v1 tag information. Winamp and every other media program I have
tried recognizes the ID3 tag information, but WMP still shows them as
unknown artist and doesn't read any tag information. I am certain the
information is there, but I think WMP must store metadata somewhere
and refuses to refresh it.

I have tried removing the files from the library and then re-adding
them... that didn't work. I wouldn't really care about WMP not
recognizing the information since I don't use it much, but this tag
information is fed to my Xbox360 for media streaming and it becomes a
real pain-in-the-ass to search through artists to unknown and scroll
through these 300+ songs and manually adding each song to the playlist
when I want to listen to a particular artist affected by this issue.

Hi examancer:

I'm having a similar problem with WMP11. May be that's the problem and
WMP11 needs a serious update and fix.

I have several old radio programs (mp3) and LPs converted to mp3s and I have
to manually retag them before I can add them WMP11. [I'd like to know the
program you use to fix Mp3 ID tags -- looking for a good one].

Then I add them to "My Music" or other monitoring folders. Once in WMP11, I
add the additional info with the Editor (in WMP11). In the past WMP11 has
found them 'no problem'. Recently, the 'metadata' service has tried to
over-ride my info and dates even though I have asked it not too [I have been
getting some really weird dates attached to some of my files as well, e.g.
2095, 2018, etc.]

My Library under "recently added" is also empty -- WMP 11 is not showing any
recently added CDs, Mp3s, etc.???? [See my posting under kattails]. The
albums or individual Mp3s are in WMP11 but are now showing up as recently
added material.

I'm rather annoyed at the amount of work WMP11 takes so I've started using
iTunes more often for fixing IDtags. It seems to work better.

I use a program called MP3tag for batch tagging and re-tagging... it
lets me change the ID3 version and encoding around to solve
compatibility problems between programs. Winamp & iTunes both read the
ID3 tag info it creates just fine... in fact, so does WMP11, assuming
I tagged the files before trying to add them to the WMP library.
However, if they are already added there does not appear to be ANY WAY
to get WMP11 to reload the tag information. I am going to remove the
files and try moving them to a different drive or folder and see if
that fixes anything... there is NO REASON I should have to do that,
and something tells me that may not work, but its extremely
frustrating when the artist/track info does not load when I'm
streaming music to my xbox360. If it weren't for the fact that WMP is
the only way to stream the files that I know of, I would have simply
ditched WMP altogether :-(

You could nuke the library to reset this--
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#medialibrary
, but I'm surprised that the player didn't pick that up. Are they under
monitored folders?

Hi Zach:

I'll check out your article on "how to fix a broken WMP11". Is this common
behaviour for WMP11 (I have XP Media Center 2005 not Vista) and Mp3 ID tags.
Like 'examancer' mentioned once you've placed the mp3's into Media Player you
can't change the ID tags? I've had the same problem in the past.

What about the missing "recently added material" within WMP11 (empty). Just
going by what I have added lately, the albums or individual songs are there
(hard to tell if I actually lost anything because I have a large Music
Folder). I've heard about this happening but have not experienced it until
recently. Is this considered "broken".

tags: I cannot reproduce this problem myself ever, and I've probably run WMP
many more times than you have, so I applaud your skills. =\ If you can
reproduce this on a mate's computer, I'd love to get in on the
reproducing-the-problem goodness too so I can potentially direct it to the
right people for looking into.

I'll address the Recently Added issue only in the other thread so I don't
get confused trying to follow two conversations in two places. =)

Hi Zach:

What is the best way to change/edit MP3 ID tags without a program for WMP 11.

I've had a few CDs that have come with just Track #'s (less known artists)
and unknown album reference. My collection is not as large as 'examancer'.

Thanks,

I don't really keep 'fresh' on the best of the huge number of
