I just bought a new computer (Dell 5400, Xeon E5430, 8Ram) running Windows XP
64bit OS. I downloaded WMP 11 for this OS and it runs fine. The only thing
missing is the mini-mode toolbar. I have tried re-installing WMP11 with no
effect. Any ideas what might be going wrong?

Try right clicking on taskbar, toolbars, and check window media player.

With respect, just what do you think was the first thing I tried? The point
is that there is no mini-mode toolbar in the taskbar menu and AFAICT there is
no other way to launch a mini-mode toolbar from the other commands. Is this a
common bug in the 64bit version of WMP11? aka have other people managed to
get a mini-mode toolbar in XP 64bit and how?

If I recall correctly, XP 64bit uses a 64bit Explorer which cannot embed
(use) the 32bit Mini Player and thus this cannot work.

This feature is supported in Vista 64bit.

Thanks for the straight information. As frustrated as I am at all the things
that don't work in XP 64bit, I remain delighted that I am not going through
all the difficulties that seem to be associated with Vista.

I take it you work for MS so I will warn you that it was a close decision to
replace this last XP computer with another Windows machine. I only did it
because I thought XP 64 would be closer to XP than it turns out to be. Going
forward and knowing what I now know, I might well make a different choice. If
I have to replace the software library anyway, then why not change platforms?

I personally do not understand XP 64bit as a choice - I would probably stick
with XP 32bit (regular) or Vista either bitness- XP 64bit is kind of a
"tweener" to me that I think is generally trumped in functionality such as
this by Vista 64bit. But that's just me.

I'll continue to work to make things better and easier.

If it helps at all, there's a 64bit version of my System Tray Control (as
seen on http://wmplugins.com ), I believe. I don't know if that'd be useful
to you, but -- I'm pretty sure I made that at one point. =)

In retrospect, I should have stayed with 32-bit. But the sales guy from Dell
was not exactly helpful in explaining the differences between XP 32, XP 64
and Vista. I think I am going to throw in the towel and send this machine
back. Again, thanks for the straight answers.
