Hi, I noticed that the windows media player, when I use it in full window or
in the toolbar mode, consumes A LOT of memory and CPU resources, even when
not playing anything and essentially idle. Just closing the application
brings CPU usage down from 65% and more to around 3-5%. Is it normal for the
media player to do this? It appears that it's using more and more memory even
when I'm not doing anything with it...

I also have found WMP11 to be a massive consumer of memory. If I start =
WMP11 and leave it idle for 11 hours it will end up growing it's memory =
use to the point of Windows giving a "low memory" warning (Windows MCE =
2005 SP2 fully up to date). I can then shut down WMP11 and memory use =
returns to normal. I've done some debugging and I think I've isolated =
this to wmp.dll. I used Process Explorer to track what was going on =
while WMP11 was idling. From what I can find using Process Explorer the =
thread under WMP11 that is working very hard at doing nothing is;

wmp.dll!Ordinal3003+0x14cb9

And the stack under this thread is as follows;

ntkrnlpa.exe!KiDispatchInterrupt+0x7f
wmp.dll!DllCanUnloadNow+0x65f95
wmp.dll!DllCanUnloadNow+0x66346
wmp.dll!DllCanUnloadNow+0x5da18
wmp.dll!DllCanUnloadNow+0x5d9c0
wmp.dll!DllCanUnloadNow+0x5d91a
wmp.dll!Ordinal3003+0x7b6d1
wmp.dll!DllCanUnloadNow+0x63dbb
wmp.dll!DllCanUnloadNow+0x63cfb
wmp.dll!DllCanUnloadNow+0x63bbc
wmp.dll!Ordinal3006+0xebeb
wmp.dll!Ordinal3006+0xe69a
wmp.dll!Ordinal3003+0x14cdf
kernel32.dll!GetModuleFileNameA+0x1b4

These all appear to be Microsoft modules. I'm hoping someone can make =
sense of this. On memory usage when leaving WMP11 active and idling =
Process explorer see's this;

On WMP11 startup;
Name Pid CPU Thd Hnd Priv CPU Time Elapsed =
Time
wmplayer 4008 0 20 441 22352 0:00:02.859 =
0:00:23.858
VM WS Priv Priv Pk Faults NonP Page
116632 33436 22352 25220 17629 22 176

And after WMP11 idles for 12 hours doing nothing;
Name Pid CPU Thd Hnd Priv CPU Time Elapsed =
Time
wmplayer 4008 1 12 376 868036 0:09:14.656 =
10:57:07.150
VM WS Priv Priv Pk Faults NonP Page
998348 514516 868036 868068 9692642 17 170

Notice after almost 11 hours WMP11 used 9 hours of CPU or above 80% just =
idling and check the climb in private, working storage and virtual =
memory!

It would be nice if someone at MS would take a close look at this.

New installation didn't help.
I've got following plugins:
GoogleTalk Music Plugin, Last.fm Plugin, Windows Live Messenger Plugin and
Nero Plugin. But the problem persists even with the plugins turned off.

Either a driver is locking up or it's doing metadata work, I would think...

Is it scanning folders on some remote machine or something of that sort?
What plug-ins do you have loaded into the player?
