I have Windows XP and WM Player 11. The media player is displayed in the task
bar but is not visible on the desktop. I can hear the sound but no player is
visible. The Windows Task Manager shows the WM Player as being open.

It has probably decided to "display" itself outside the visible area of
your desktop. There are keyboard tricks you can use to move such a
window, but I don't need them often enough to remember them. You could
get some slight relief by right clicking in your task bar, click
"Toolbars" and select "Windows Media Player". This will eventually get
you the mini player view in the taskbar, which contains a few controls
to play with.

Then it is outside my area of competence. Sorry.

If I were in your position I'd try removing WMP then re-installing it,
conscious of the fact that I might lose the entire content of my library
catalogue (but not tracks themselves).

I haven't played with plugins, but if I had, I'd remove/disable those
first.

After your first suggestion I did finally manage to find the mini window on the task bar but the controls are limited and I could not find a way to manipulate the device. Thanks anyway for your suggestions. I'm becoming more and more a Mac fan:)

If it is just off-screen,
right click the wmp icon on the taskbar.
select move and use the keyboard directional arrows.

You said that it does appear in your taskbar (not the mini-player, the
standard tab, hopefully)

Right click on that, click "move" then use the mouse, or the keyboard
arrow keys, to see if you can persuade it to come back onto your
desktop. If it doesn't appear, try the same trick, but click "size". It
may have shrunk to 0x0 pixels, which means you wouldn't see it.

Of course, if something else is causing it not to appear then neither of
these will help, but it's worth a shot.

What devices are attached to the system?
So you click the shortcut to the player and nothing happens?
