I recently bought a new PC with Vista. On my old XP machine (also running
WMP 11) I had no problem running 32 kbps bitrate mp3s (voice recordings
predominantly).

On my Vista machine I get a 'skipping' effect similar to listening to a very
old record. I have no problem playing any other mp3 at 128+ kbps bitrate.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32 bit on a Gateway FX7024 quad core (2.4)
w/ 3 Gig Ram. I am using WMP 11 with current updates.

Any thoughts would be apprecaited. Thanks for your help.

If it's a Sigmatel high definition audio chipset, you might be
experiencing the same issue as the previous poster and a lot of Dell
users :

http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=vista&thread.id=6860

The steps there would be to download and install new drivers (from
Gateway) where available, then to disable audio enhancements if that
doesn't fix it up.

I tried your suggestion of the "Disable all..." - no dice...I still have the
skipping.

I contacted Gateway's tech support. They suggested that I try another mp3
playing program. I d/l-ed Winamp 5.53. I have no skips with that program on
the 32 kbps mp3s.

Any other helpful ideas? And thanks again.

My Device Manager lists it as "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC".

Like I said. It is really weird that Winamp 5.53 will play the low bitrate
mp3s fine, but WMP 11 won't. No error messages, just poor 'record skipping'
playback.

Thanks again.

Did you get the drive update from them too?
If I recall correctly, you need both the driver update AND to turn off
enhancements.

Yes. I checked the Gateway site and checked my current driver yesterday -
they are the same version number. I also turned off enhancements as
suggested. No change in playback for the low bit rate MP3s in WMP 11 (but
they play fine in Winamp 5.53).

Thanks again.

I tried some higher-than 32 bit rate mp3s, but less than 128 bitrate, they
also were 'skipping'. However the closer to 128 they were, the skipping
wasn't as often.

Hope that may help.
