Hi all,

My computer is suffering from some horrible symptoms at the moment; it
cannot even cough a sound. The only sound it can make is the default ringing
when the computer starts.

The computer crashed while I tried to load a video file on a local news
channel (it's WMP plug-in). An error message/solution appeared in bubble at
the taskbar, clicked it, and a message glaring at me in blue said, "a program
that uses the waveOutWrite" function on a Windows Vista-based computer:
"MMSYSERR_NODRIVER".

There was a link, which I obviously followed. I followed the link for the
32-bit systems, opened it after installation, and nothing happened.

Searched on Microsoft for "936316" and updated my system with the Service
Package. Again, I got nothing.

Checked, and I have an audio driver installed--Realteck High Definition
Audio.

Now, can someone kindly help me to at least pinpoint this ghastly disease?
Is this a problem with the OS or the computer itself? Again, the only audio I
can hear is when the computer starts, with the default ding-ding-ding.

Thanks for any valuable information.

I just realized I am having the EXACT same issue. It began after installing
the automatic Windows Updates on 6/25.

I usually keep my sound off unless I am doing something which specifically
uses it, and had assumed the scope of my problem was Windows Media Player.
However, I just noticed that the audio does not work for my VLC Player
either, or for any other programs.

I am now MUCH more frustrated by the scope of this problem, and how
Microsoft utterly and irresponsibly avoids providing any kind of support for
their products in lieu of giving people the run-around.

Hi there, MU!

I'm sorry to hear your computer is infected with this bad problem also. Are
you running on Vista? I am, and after a ridiculously two-hour search, I
learned my computer needed a BIOS (??--I think) update. I'm not so great with
these computer terms, but following the instructions, I cured my computer and
I can play sounds again! I referred to the official Sony site--the brand of
my computer. I went through the help FAQs and such, and luckily, landed on
the page describing my problem. Updated the BIOS and yes, it's all better. =]

Perhaps you should try checking the site for your computer brand and model.

Hope that can be some use for you. Good luck!

I have an HP Pavilion DV6000 laptop actually.

I suppose I could check out HP's website.
