Window Media Player 11 codecs (problems)

I wish MS, would paste this on there website,
How to play 99% of all video & audio media out there.

Have 400 + video, in .avi .ogm .mkv .h264 vorbis..etc
and media player 11 with / service pack 1 for vista
can't play even one video, as for audio... well
I have 3400 .flac files, and 1200 .ogg files,
and about 200 monkey audio.. WMP 11 can't even play those too.

So, can someone please tell, if there ANY way,
of installing some codec' pack's, that would allow me
to play the above mention video and audio files...and of course
Freeware would be very nice.

Most of the file types you mention have never been supported by WMP
out of the box. Sometimes it can find a codec for it installed on your
computer by another player, etc. Support of non-Microsoft formats has
never seemed to have been of much importance to Microsoft on their
WMPs. In fact WMP 10 and 11 can be installed only on a Windows XP or
Vista OS and not even an earlier Microsoft one. There have been and
still are some codecs that will work on some versions of WMP on some
OSs. When WMP or the OS is updated, some of these codecs usually fail.
Apparently codecs for the WMP are more difficult to write than for
many other players, and Microsoft may make updates at any time that
may not work with existing codecs. The codecs are for the most part
written by non-Microsoft associated persons. I remember one codec I
had that allowed an earlier version of WMP to play flac. On a WMP
version upgrade, instead of failing completely, WMP just gave full
volume noise when you clicked on a flac file. Most other problems with
codecs on upgrade were just complete failure. You have Vista, and it
is most likely that many codecs that would work for WMP on XP will not
work on Vista with WMP11 as the only version of WMP that can be
installed on it.

You can do a Google search for something like ".flac WMP Vista" etc
and may come up with some codecs that would work. However, since Vista
is fairly new, your search could require a lot of time. WMP is not the
only player around. For instance, I also have the most recent version
of Winamp. It plays more file types than WMP as delivered and there
are a huge number of codecs for it that can be found on a Google
search. For instance, my Winamp plays ogg, mpr, mpc, aiff, wma, midi,
mp3, wav, wmv, flac, ape, and other files. If you do not find the
codecs you need for WMP 11 on Vista, I strongly suggest you download
the free Winamp and use it to play your files, at least until you can
get proper codecs for WMP 11 on Vista. Just make certain any Winamp
you download is intended for the Vista OS. I am still using the XP OS.

When possible, download codecs for single file types only rather than
large packages of them. A new codec sometimes will cause problems with
other programs on the computer, and it is far easier to resolve the
problem if you can easily remove a new codec. Make certain that any
codecs you add can be easily uninstalled unless you have direct
information from someone who has the exact same OS and player version
you have and finds the codec works and does not cause problems.

Hallo, There are people who don´t recommend to use codecs pack because they
say they can produce compatibility and corruption problems. For playing flac
and .mp4 and more files with wmp11 i recommend to follow the instructions of
guides in the following link:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_mp4_files.cfm
in the same web page you can find a guide for flac files. In this way you
only need some particular codecs.

A: That's interesting if you take a historical view and note the times that
Microsoft has played non-Microsoft formats and then those formats later had
external blocking factors introduced that disabled the Microsoft file
filters.

B: For the smaller formats, it's interesting to look at the relative scale
of usage. I'm a fan of "everything just works" myself, but for the niche
file formats - they really are pretty niche still.

Plus, Microsoft pretty much helped mainstream MP3 if you paid attention back
in 1997-2000. I'm pretty certain that the most distributed MP3 codec in
that time period was the ACM version that FhG/MS put together. The fact
that ID3 remains a headache... well, clearly we need more of a multimedia
consortium sorting out that sad space. =(

It seems too much discussing for something not so difficult. What I
appreciated most was the long stories Mr. MFST told us instead of givimg an
advice. He has plenty of time to spend; so much that he did not produce a
useful inforation

Flac is a commun sound typa file and you will find indications about what
you want at a Microsoft site. They seem to hide information, obviously for
commercial interest, so they hide the information on their own site. Paradox,
but true. Start by looking up at http://www.wmplugins.com/ a Microsoft's
site. There, you will find how to get the Flac codec, as well as many others.
If not complretely sarisfied, then get a pack for Vista that nobody
complained about until today, at
http://files1.majorgeeks.com/files/cabe9e1b214ce57538a20ca6688a8ee0/multimedia/VistaCodecs_v473.exe

It is not possible to overstress enough how much serious damage bad codec
packs have done to user's systems. In terms of overall industry failures,
they are probably the second (if not first) leading cause of failure behind
viruses.

I don't try to straighten out the fiasco of codec packs because I have
"plenty of time" but because bad codec packs cripple the Windows experience
for users.

To paraphrase: if you're not angry at codec packs, you haven't been paying
attention. You combine seriously buggy codecs with seriously badly written
installers with limited to no quality control and ... end users get to
suffer. That sucks.
