Hi, I have managed to set up sharing to my PS3, and most of the files that
my Vista Business x64 PC has within the "My Music" or "My Videos" folders
work... but I have several folders full of Audio on another computer running
XP Pro....

I access these music files through my Vista machine that has a Network drive
mapped to my XP machine, and also has the offline files set up so that I can
still play the media and synchronise to the XP machine when it's switched
off...

So, basically, I need to know how to grant access to the PS3 to READ this
offline folder.

Can you simply SHARE a mapped offline network drive within Vista?

Any other solutions?

I hope i've explained my requirements fully.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that on the PS3 I can SEE the files in the
offline folder, but when going to play them, I get "media server error
80710028"

I'm not sure - I've never tried offline drives in any OS ;-)

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/sharing.mspx#q20_3
might indicate that you need to first check windows permissions for
access to that directory across the machines :

"If you want to share files in a monitored folder that is located on
another computer..." also notes there's a specific registry key you
have to modify to get this to work in the first place.

Hi Ian,

I tried unsuccessfully to get a PS3 to find shared folders in XP. It's
supposed to be a simple process, but for some it's impossible.

You have to have WMP11 on the XP machine. In Services, SSDP Discovery
Service needs to be running along with Universal Plug and Play Device
Host. Also a wired network connection works better than wireless.

I finally wound up using TVersity, and instead of having it Auto Detect
devices (which it didn't to), I specified the PS3. Then the PS3 found
the Shared folders I set up in TVersity. At least for me, that's what
it took to solve a simple process.

Yeah, I finally tried using my PS3 to do this, and it was really
finicky/failed a lot. It worked like a champ on the xbox 360, though.

Given everything else, I'm thinking there's some issues with the PS3 here
that Sony might want to look into. =\

Is it any wonder why the xbox works? Since using TVersity, everything
works fine with the PS3. If I can just get WMP11 to completely go away
on my system...

I would assume because the xbox team tested this scenario more thoroughly?
Since my Roku and Xbox 360 work flawlessly, the evidence initially points to
the PS3 having an issue here. I'm not an expert at debugging the PS3's
media server support, but I bet Sony is and could illuminate this more
properly.

Maybe because it's an MS product? I have no issues now that I'm using a
non-MS product for sharing. TVersity did easily what WMP11 couldn't do.
