WMP 10 no longer plays streams
I can no longer connect to a live stream of radio or video like cspan radio
or cspan tv. This is true whether I am playing it in a web page or directly
thru the player. There is nothing wrong with my network as I can play the
same streams in some of my other players but not all. Apparently those
players that use parts of WMP to play streams can no longer play them and
those that don't can play the streams.
This is the error message I get in WMP:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is
not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a
different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:").

avail. Tag: Parental Ratings in Windows Media Player 11 Tag: 262990
Unable to Rollback to WMP 10
I need to do a firmware upgrade on my Creative Zen MP3 player but
cannot do so until I downgrade to WMP 10. Unfortunately XP SP2 will
not rollback the player for me. I have followed the instructions on
the Microsoft website but when I go into Add/Remove Programs and try
to rollback, the operation tells me that it succeeded. I restart and
WMP11 is still installed so of course I can't remove the other
programs to required to do the Firmware upgrade. Any ideas how to get
around this problem? Tag: Parental Ratings in Windows Media Player 11 Tag: 262987
Ripping a CD to an MP3 file to a hard drive
When I use Windows Media 11 player to rip a selected CD track to an MP3
file, it seems to want only to do this to a CD drive.
I assume there has to be a path to send the MP3 file to a defined hard drive
path - is there not?
While I am a very experienced computer user, I am new to this area of
activity.
I also find WMP 11 a little kludgy to work with ripping selections, creating
playlists, et al. But that may well be because I'm just not that well versed
in doing these things. Are there any good free "tutorials" around that I
could download for such activities.
I was referred to iTunes. But I don't want to use any of Apple's software.
Apple Quicktime for movies was a real PITA, and I got rid of it years ago.

Playing _from_ mp3 player?
Hello,
I have a Sansa Clip which I have loaded with .wma files from my home
computer by sync'ing with WMP 11 at home. I have a USB cable at work
with which I can connect the player to my work computer. Is there a
way to get WMP 11 to play these files directly from the player on my
computer at work without copying them to my hard disk using Explorer?
This seems like it should be a simple thing to do, yet it does not
appear immediately obvious how to do so. All help greatly
appreciated...thanks.

How to prevent WMP11 from saving UNC path instead of drive letter?
Hello! I have noticed that whenever I add files to the WMP11 library
from a mounted network drive (e.g. E:\Media pointing to my server/
share), WMP11 will resolve the UNC name and store \\myserver\share
\Media instead of e:\Media.
Q: Is there any way to prevent this behaviour?
Background: As a mobile user I regularly change environments where
different servers will provide me with the same set of media files.
The servers are in sync, so they do have the same files. Yet, WMP11
will try to locate any given file on Server1 which might not be
available in Environment B and vice vesa. This is cumbersome.
Please advise.
Thank you & BR

WMP11 problems with MP3 ID3 tag data
I use a 3rd party program (MP3tag) to update the ID3 information on my
MP3 files because it can do several at once. I have about 300 files
that I recently ripped from CD that were missing the ID3 tag
information (technically, most of them had ID3 tags, but it was
ID3v2.4 which WMP does not appear to support). I re-tagged all of the
files with both ID3v2.3 (which WMP reads fine from my other MP3s) and
ID3v1 tag information. Winamp and every other media program I have
tried recognizes the ID3 tag information, but WMP still shows them as
unknown artist and doesn't read any tag information. I am certain the
information is there, but I think WMP must store metadata somewhere
and refuses to refresh it.
I have tried removing the files from the library and then re-adding
them... that didn't work. I wouldn't really care about WMP not
recognizing the information since I don't use it much, but this tag
information is fed to my Xbox360 for media streaming and it becomes a
real pain-in-the-ass to search through artists to unknown and scroll
through these 300+ songs and manually adding each song to the playlist
when I want to listen to a particular artist affected by this issue. Tag: Parental Ratings in Windows Media Player 11 Tag: 262953
Slow play, choppy music
I have the Vista Home Premium o/s. It takes 30 seconds to play the song once

Overhauling auto sync playlists
I am trying to overhaul my auto sync playlists. I started with these
playsts:
- 4 or 5 stars (the defaut one)
- All Music
The above just managed to fit all my songs on my device (a 8GB microSDHC
card) ... it was 99% full. I have now set up my own auto playlists because
I want to be a bit more selective about the music on my device. I removed
the above two playlists completely and then added the auto playlists I
created all in one step:
- 5 star
- 4 star
- 3 star
- 2 star
- Unrated
The goal here was to delete all the music I had rated as '1 star'. I
figured what would happen is that WMP11 would scan the music already on my
device that it was aware of (seeing as I used WMP11 sync to put it there in
the first place), notice that all of the music specified in these new
playlists already existed on the device, and then notice that some songs
(namely the 1 star ones) were no longer required on the device and remove
them.
To my dismay instead it made a sync list in the "sync results" pane that
listed all the new playlist songs as if they had never been synced to the
device in the first place. Naturally the synch for all these songs failed
because there was essentially no room left on the card. It said "did not
fit on device" for every single one of them instead of "already on device",
which is what I was expecting. On top of that, it did not delete the 1 star
songs from the device like I was expecting.
Does anyone know why this is and how I can fix it? I am expecting to much
from WMP. This seemed like a fairly basic thing to me and I expected it to
be as smooth as butter. By the way I am using Vista 32 Premium. Has anyone
gotten a similar setup with a large auto-sync playlist change like this to
work properly? Tag: Parental Ratings in Windows Media Player 11 Tag: 262951
Stop WMP 11 from attempt to sync memory cards
Is there a way to get it to stop automatically scanning every memory
card I stick in my USB reader? This is INCREDIBLY annoying - I use
WMP to watch my baby via an IP cam - having it up and running seems
to make it think it's ok to scan everything.
Please - provide a way to disable this. Besides the annoyance, it
also kicks the player out of skin mode which is even MORE annoying as
WELL as shutting down the video I am watching.
In general, this entire feature seems to have issues.

external hard drive sync

No audio in DVD playback on PC - what am I doing wrong?
Hey folks: I am for the first time in my life trying to play a video
DVD on my desktop PC (believe it or not). I have a commercially
recorded documentary (title "King Corn") lent from a friend, and can't
get it to play properly. The problem is no sound. The video looks
fine, but there's no audio output whatsoever. I've tried using Windows
Mediaplayer as well as a program called Media Player Classic. Both
behave pretty much the same way -- the video plays silently.
When the film first opens, it shows me a "menu" in the form of two
selections, the first of which is the film, the second is a blank box
labeled "Empty Title". I select the first box (which has the thumbnail-
size, shrunk-down opening shot of the movie). Then the screen is
filled with the opening scene in the playback window frame, and to the
right is a list of "chapters" in the DVD info window frame, listed
under the heading "Title 1". Also on the opening screen is a sort of
on-screen, text menu that offers three choices: Play, Chapters and
Audio Options.
It seems that Audio Options would be the thing to select at this
point, but I can't get it to respond. I tried clicking on it with the
mouse pointer. Also tried moving the selection highlight with the
arrow keys, and some other keys (spacebar, tab, page-up, page-down).
Nothing seems to move the highlight off the "Play" option. So okay, I
Iet it start playing, but get no sound, even with the volume boosted
to the highest setting.
I played around a bit with some of the Win Mediaplayer menu options
that looked like they might be relevant to audio output, but to no
avail. Is it possible that this disc is recorded in such a way to
preclude it from playing back (with audio) on a computer?
Everything else seems to work -- skipping forward, pausing and
resuming play. I'm thinking that there's something very basic that
I'm missing. But what?
On the DVD itself, there are two directories, VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS.
In the VIDEO_RM directory, there are three files: VIDEO_RM.BUP,
VIDEO_RM.DAT and VIDEO_RM.IFO. In the VIDEO_TS directory there are
ten files:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB
VTS_01_5.VOB

loading a few wav files to listen to in order...do I need a degree to do that?
I have just been preparing a list of 12 audio files saved as WAV containing
the spoken word - and thought I would used Windows media Player to play them
through so I could hear how well one runs onto the next. The files are
saved in a folder on my separate hard drive.
The media player seems to think I have to complete a degree course on
playlists and libraries and god knows what else before I can play anything.
All I actually need is a button saying 'find your files here' where I could
see the drive I want, access it, see the 12 files I want, select them, press
OK and there they are on the screen waiting for me to press play. That
seems logical to me.
Or can kind person recommend some other player where loading files and
playing them is simple?
Thanks in advance. Tag: Parental Ratings in Windows Media Player 11 Tag: 262935

Short audio files clip/skip in Vista
Has anyone seen clipping of short audio files when played on Windows
Vista? It sometimes sounds like the files are "skipping." I've read a
number of posts about this, but none of the fixes seem to help.
I've uploaded some sample files and I'm looking for people to tell me
if they are having the same problem on their machines.
The end of this file clips on WMP Vista:
http://www.thetravelyear.com/work/vista_audio/test-short.wma
This file has a little silence added to the end and plays fine:
http://www.thetravelyear.com/work/vista_audio/test-long.wma
I could just add silence to my files like I did above, but I need to
maintain 20+ language training applications - each of which has
thousands of short utterances. I don't want to be forced to do such an
ugly hack just to support Vista.
Several other people have suggested downloading new drivers and
disable all audio enhancements, but that hasn't helped. And the
problem isn't just on RealTek and SigmaTel audio drivers - I've seen
it on my Creative X-Fi card as well with brand new drivers. I've
validated this error on a number of machines and with Vista SP1.
Can anyone help me out? This is very frustrating and I need a better
solution.

Cannot Connect To Server
Hello...
Some good friends of mine are having trouble streaming songs from my
website. I know the problem does not stem from my end...because everyone
else I know has no trouble at all w/ my music files. They simply go to my
site, click on a song link; & the song streams & plays perfectly.
Anyway...when they attempt to do the same...the message my friends are
getting on their PC reads:
>>Windows Media Player cannot connect to the server. The server name may
>>not be correct, the server may not be available, or your proxy settings
>>might not be correct.<<
Since I've ruled out the first two fixes, I followed the instructions in the
WMP help files on fixing the proxy settings...but that doesn't work either.
Anyone have any ideas, here?

UNABLE TO REFRESH MUSIC LIBRARY IN WMP11
I had to copy copy My Music folder from my PC1 to PC2. Before I did this, I
saved My Music folder on PC2 and renamed it My Music-old, then I copied the
contents of My Music from PC1 to My Music folder in PC2 via my network. I
later deleted My Music-old.
When I try to play the songs in WMP11, I am unable to refresh the music
library and I only see a ghost list of duplicate music tracks listed from
the old folder that was deleted. These old folders are no longer on my hard
drive but WMP11 still shows them as ghosts files in the Music Library. I
have tried to delete the Music Library using every possible method available
in WMP11, and I even uninstalled the program in safe mode, then reinstalled
it but the ghost music library still appears and if I try to click on a song
to play it, I get a message that the track is missing (since WMP11 is
pointing to music files that are deleted off the drive). I tried again to
refresh the library but WMP11 won't do so and won't find "My Music" folder
even though the location is the same default location as before on my local
drive for PC2.
Since I was not able to figure how to fix the problem, I deleted WMP11 and
rolled back to WMP9 which works with no problems. I tried once more to
upgrade to WMP11 but the same problem with it creating a ghost music library
keeps happening.
Is there any knowledge base article or hotfix or any solution for this
problem?

Odd autoplay problem
If I put a CD in my drive with no applications running, the cursor
brings up the little CD icon, the light goes on, then nothing. If I
then click on Autoplay, the dialoge box comes up. I select an option
and check off to do it everytime. The action, for example play in
WinAmp, occurs.
I then take out the CD, close WinAmp, right back to square one, look
at AutoPlay and nothing stuck. However, if the application, say
WinAmp, is running then the disk plays. Autoplay is enabled for the
drive, and in group policies.
If I launch Media Player and configure it to rip the CD upon
insertion, that works as well IF it is already open, but it won't
launch it first.
The end goal here is I want to put a CD in this system, have MP rip it
and play it, then eject it, even if MP isn't running already. If the
content is already in my library, just play it. This is a server
(WinXP Pro) I use for media that is connected to my LCD TV and I don't
want to have to power up the TV to play a CD.

Aspect ratio resetting to 4:3, but only in WMP11
I record a good deal of video, always using a 16:9 aspect ratio. The camera
I use formats the video with a .MOD extension. WMP11 refuses to play the
video in anything other than 4:3. VLC, MPC & Zoom play the video correctly.
(VLC and MPC are setup to force 16:9, while Zoom worked with no problems.).
Manually changing the extension to .AVI or .MPG does not affect the playback,
and converting the files to any other format, using the default setting of
the source file, also does not fix the problem. I tried to following
software used to covert the files: Any Video Covnerter and Nero 7.
I have the latest DiVX codecs loaded as well as any that were installed with
VLC, MPC and Zoom. Nvidia video card (7950x2) with latest drivers. An
associate recommended that I install the CCCP codec pack...bad idea?
What am I missing? Why do I have to force players to display 16:9? Why
does WMP11 refuse to play these files in 4:3, and why are there no options
within the software to change the desired aspect ratio?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Tag: Parental Ratings in Windows Media Player 11 Tag: 262870

Why Does WMP 11 Change My Music Library
When I try to update my music library, the names of the files are
changed. They appear the way I want them and I don't want WMP to
change anything, just add missing info or album art.
Also, can I get rid of certain information (tags, album art) that
appears in the library that I don't want?

Low bitrate mp3 'skips' during playback
I recently bought a new PC with Vista. On my old XP machine (also running
WMP 11) I had no problem running 32 kbps bitrate mp3s (voice recordings
predominantly).
On my Vista machine I get a 'skipping' effect similar to listening to a very
old record. I have no problem playing any other mp3 at 128+ kbps bitrate.
I am running Vista Home Premium 32 bit on a Gateway FX7024 quad core (2.4)
w/ 3 Gig Ram. I am using WMP 11 with current updates.
Any thoughts would be apprecaited. Thanks for your help. Tag: Parental Ratings in Windows Media Player 11 Tag: 262848

WMP 11 rips CD's on its own?
Recently (like the past month or two), I've noticed that every time I so
much as place a cd in my system, whether to play it, or rip it... WMP opens
itself and starts ripping the cd all on its own. I've gone into the Program
options and looked under every tab. Finally saw a check box that, if
checked, would make WMP do exactly this. Well... personally I don't like WMP
and prefer to use a different program. I cleared the box. Even after
clearing the box, it STILL DOES IT! Anyone have a clue how/why it does this?
I tried looking around online but had no luck. It's frustrating that I have
to quickly shut WMP down before it gets very far into the ripping process
each time a cd is inserted. THEN I have to go to the folder WMP is ripping
to and delete the folder with the (usually) microscopic file in it. I
shouldn't have to do any of this.
Help?
Thanx in advance

Inconsistent Artist display order
I have just acquired a CD by the Swedish group Anglagard, except the
first letter is an A-umlaut and the second "a" is an a-ring.
In my "Songs" display, albums are listed alphabetically by artist, with
Anglagard falling between Andreas Vollenweider and Anonymous 4. This
seems right to me.
However, in the "Artist" display, Anglagard is in a section all by itself.
I don't know the relative merits of these two approaches; I'd need to
get the opinion of someone Swedish, but they are certainly inconsistent.

Amazon Unbox / Vista SP1 / Windows Media Play 11
Just download a video from Amazon Unbox. When I try to play it in WMP, WMP
canâ??t play it and then attempts to download WMP9 codecs and then fails.
Anyone else seen this. Any remedies?
Iâ??ve contacted Amazon and they suggested a hotfix, but the hotfix wonâ??t
install. Besides this suggestion, Amazon is at a lost.
PS the same video(s) work fine on the XPSP2 laptop running WMP11 Tag: Parental Ratings in Windows Media Player 11 Tag: 262837

Using media player for a hard disc full of DVDs - Windows XP?
Hello,
I'm sure this question has been asked before but I thought I'd find out for
sure. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with all the patches - latest media
player 11.05721 - as far as I know. I saw several recent articles about
ripping DVDs to your hard drive. So I ripped two DVDs to my hard drive so
far and renamed the folders to the names of the movies. I can manually
select the VOB files in those folders and play them but I'd like to see the
movie titles show up in my movie library in media player.
I saw a nifty program/hardware solution called kaleidescape or something
like that that does what I want but it seemed very expensive. I already
have a couple of movies on my hard drive, I just want an easy playback from
a library.
Thanks Tag: Parental Ratings in Windows Media Player 11 Tag: 262823
I enabled Media Sharing and saw there are settings for Parental Ratings. Are
Parenal Ratings something I can set for each song/video in my library? If
so, how do I do it?
