I have XP with latest service packs and Windows Media Player 11.

Yesterday, when I tried to play a MPG file via Windows Media Player, it
played but without video and the sound was distorted. I use to be able to
play MPG files.

I tried reinstalling Media Player but did not fix the issue.

I also can no longer play MPG files via DivX player. But the weird thing is
I can via WinDVD.

Do I have a codec issue where some multimedia programs may have corrupted
the MPEG codec? But then why would WinDVD be ok?

Looking forward to your advice. Thanks.

I forgot to mention, I am not having any issues with AVI files in Windows
Media Player 11, only MPEG so far.

AFAIK, WinDVD installs its own decoder, which WMP can't access.

You can at least check the installed MPEG2 decoders using the DecCheck
tool available from this microsoft page :

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=DE1491AC-0AB6-4990-943D-627E6ADE9FCB&displaylang=en

It may list several decoders and possibly will indicate at least one
which is WMP compatible for playback. If you get that, try to switch
to the compatible decoder - otherwise you may have to reinstall your
original DVD playback decoder (if you had one previously) or purchase
one, if not.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for your advice.

After installing the decoder check program, I had a decoder, InterVideo
Video Decoder, that was compatible with Media Player.

After switching to this, my MPEG-2 files still didn't not work properly with
same issues with video and sound.

I will try to reboot as I could see it changed some registry values.

Cheers.
