I am trying to view a page that has a MIDI file embedded into it. However,
right now Realplayer tries to play the file, and I get some lousy error
pop-up.

I want to know how to restore the default in IE7 so that WMP11 will play the
MIDI file. On my Vista Ultimate desktop, I set WMP so that "it has all its
defaults." What else do I need to change?

When you download Real and many other players they often ask you if
you want it to play all types of files for which it is capable. They
also offer custom selection, which you should always use if you have
other players installed. If you do not do this Real or many other
players will grab all of the files it can play from other players. The
safest bet when you install a new player is to select only file
formats unique to that player at first, such as Real formats in the
case of the Real player. You can always come back later and allow it
to play more types. Also you can in most cases open a player and enter
the location of a file on your computer or a URL and then the player
will play any file that it can.

In your case, at least WMP and Real are installed. First I would go to
Real player and select tools near the top of the screen. Then select
preferences from the dropdown. Then click the + sign on content to
bring up "media types" There select the button to manually configure
types for Real Player. You will find a long list of media file types
Real 11 will play with a checkbox by each. Make sure only file types
you want Real to play are checked and uncheck any file tyes that Real
player should not play. When you are finished be sure to select any
apply or other "I am finished" type of button that may appear. The
list also tells you to which player each file type is now assigned.
Thus you may have to go to WMP, QT, Winamp, etc players you may have
and select preferences for file types you want then to play or not to
play. If you make 2 or more players primary for the same file type,
results are uncertain., and depend on many factors. Making certain
that each file type is made primary for only one player as described
will clear up most problems of this sort. In very severe cases, it may
be necessary to uninstall the player that is stealing file types from
other players and reinstall it, taking care that it is installed to
play only desired file types.

The new Real 11 player now will play most of the more common Windows,
Real, Apple, and other media file types, so if you do not do a custom
install and allow it to play everything it can, there may not be many
file types left for other players to play.

I always do custom installs...but this Realplayer was very sneaky, it seems.

I tried going into Realplayer, but it only gives the option to "deselect"
whether Real is the default player--it doesn't reassign what program will
handle those files. First I tried reassiging a few extensions by looking
them up in Control Panel, but when I opened the page, Real still tried to
play the MIDI (MIDI is still listed in Real as being handled by WMP). I just
deselected all the extensions in Real--can't reassign all of them in Control
Panel, 'cause some don't show the extension in Real.

Any other ideas?

I just upated Real...didn't help.
I Reset IE7...didn't help.
Real isn't listed in "Set Programs Default" box.

So, which Registry key do I hack now? :)

It is rather strange. I have XP, but you have Vista. I have WMP 11,
Real 11, and the most recent versions of Winamp, QT and a few other
players. I have midi and wav both playing on the WMP 11 without
problem and use several browsers. The most trouble I ever had was with
QT on some earlier versions of the Mozilla family browsers. Not having
the Vista OS, I can not check if that is part of the problem. You can
open the WMP 11 or Real 11 player and input a file on your computer or
a url directly. On some versions of the WMP in some settings, you have
to right click a WMP icon in the extreme top left of the player window
to bring up the needed menus. Then the player should play any file
type for which it is capable, regardless of which player is set to be
primary for that file type. See if you can get a midi to play in this
way by direct input. If not, the problem likely lies in the WMP, not
the Real player and the computer may be defaulting to a second player
that will play a midi (Real in this case) when the WMP decides it can
not play a midi.

What's the URL to a web page showing this issue? I'd like to understand how
they're starting the player, which then would likely lead to what support
RealPlayer has taken over.

How did you set WMP to "all defaults"? You probably would want to use the
Set Program Access and Defaults tool from the Default Programs control
panel.

There is one other thing that might cause your problem. Real often
uses a .ram or .rpm file which is a playlist file which can point to 1
or more actual audio files such as .ra. or other file such as .wma or
midi, that Real can play. The reason that this is done is that it
starts progressive download streaming. About the same thing can be
done with the WMP using .wax Microsoft redirector files which will
cause progressive download streaming on the WMP. If your problem page
with a midi uses a .ram or .rpm playlist/redirector file, your midi
likely would play on the Real 11 player regardless of which player is
set to be primary for midi. Likewise, if a Microsoft .wax playlist/
redirector file is used for the midi, it likely would play on the WMP
regardless of settings for what is the primary player.

I ran into this sort of thing a few years ago for one of my SMIL media
presentations. SMIL is an xml language for which support is not built
into most browsers. One usually must have a SMIL player to play it.
Fortunately Real player has supported most of SMIL 2 for several
years. When I tried to play one of my SMIL files, it got sent to the
QT player. It turns out that QT then supported a bit of SMIL 1, not
suited for my SMIL 2 file. To solve the problem I used a .ram playlist/
redirector file that points to the .smil file. Then the .smil file was
properly opened by the Real player.
