I have most of my media on my home desktop (XP SP2 Home), around 700 songs,
7,000 pictures, and 500 movie files (MPG and AVI) stored on 4 external hard
drives totaling 1.75 TB. I have printer and file sharing enabled, I have
Media sharing in WMP11 enabled on my XP. I'm able to see all types of my
media from my PS3 just fine. I am able to view and open all shared media in
windows by using network locations, shared/mapped drives, typing
\\computername or \\\ipaddress from my Windows Vista Machine.

However, I'm only able to see my Music and my Pictures (Granted this takes a
while to load) from my XP machine on my Vista Ultimate laptop in WMP11.
I've double checked my sharing settings on the XP machine to be sure that it
is sharing everything. I removed my Vista machine from the shared devices
and added it back on the XP Machine. I'm beginning to think something is
corrupt on my Windows XP machine when it comes to what it will share with my
Vista computer.

Any help or solution to this strange sharing problem is greatly appreciated.

Rob

Firewalls or other 3rd party Security software comes to mind. If you are
running the later does it have a setting to allow friendly comps to talk.

TPow,

Thanks for your response. Currently I have Windows Firewall disabled on my
Vista machine, and no other security software.

I find it most perplexing that the Vista machine can see the Music and
Pictures but not the video.

In my previous post I indicated I could see and open all types of media
including my Video from my PS3. Which leads me to believe it is not a
firewall problem, otherwise I'd have the same trouble on the PS3. I've taken
the time to classify each movie in a genre in WMP 11 for easier access from
PS3, with 500 titles you need someway to classify them, which works
perfectly. This way I can view just my comedy movies even if the list
contains titles on multiple drives.

I wonder if there is a way to remove the settings for a device (the Vista
computer) in media sharing in some way...a registry key removal or edit.
Essentially restarting the sharing to that device.

Any thoughts?

Rob

Copy a video from XP to Vista and check if it plays. Just to exclude the
possibility of a wrong Codec, file association, etc on the Vista box

You'd need all the media locations to be "Monitored folders" in media
player - press F3 and use the advanced dialog to see those settings
and see the built-in media player help for extensive instructions on
how to run folder monitoring of stuff other than below "My Documents"

The fact that the content is on external hard disks "counts" as remote
media sharing, that is - as if the content was shared from another PC.

In that case, this article has some registry settings which may help :
"If you want to share files in a monitored folder that is located on
another computer (for example, a folder on a network share)"
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/sharing.mspx#q20_3

You'd need all the media locations to be "Monitored folders" in media
player - press F3 and use the advanced dialog to see those settings

Permissions issues on the folders containing the content may also be
in the mix :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/sharing.mspx#q20_14

That's a few pointers - let us know how you get on with initially the
monited locations

Do they share correctly *from* the Vista machine?

XP sharing is partially limited due to the older network stack on XP that
doesn't support the full range of functionality.
