Note that will only download a limited subset of codecs created by MS
- so for example it won't offer the pretty common DivX or H264 codecs
That's most likely from a licensing and support viewpoint rather than
any malicious intent - if MS offered a specific 3rd party codec, it
could be seen as anti-competitive and require them to offer support
for that codec too.
WMP has a plugin architecture which allows use of DirectShow or media
foundation based codecs, most commonly you'd search the web for
"(codec name) + Directshow" to get one which works in WMP.
