I am unsuccessfully trying to upgrade to Windows Media Player 11 in Media
Center on a Dell Computer I bought in January 2005.

According to Media Center under â??Settings â?? General - About Media Center â??
Software Versionâ??, I have:
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Version: 5.1.2700.2230 built by:
private/xpsp_mcs_qfe(wmbla)
Copyright 1985-2004 Microsoft Corp.

When I execute â??wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exeâ??, it gives the error message:
â??Unsupported Operating System.
Please visit Windows Update to download the Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP
Media Center Edition 2005 before installing Windows Media Player 11.â??

The log file â??wmsetup.logâ?? says:

[*WMC Logging begun at 2008/05/04 - 20:15:01. Logging at level: '4'. OS is
NT. OSVer is 5.1.2600.0.3119. System Lang is 1033. Prev version system is

Setup commandlines are C:\DOCUME~1\Tom\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\setup_wm.exe

Install denied: Unsupported Media Center OS. Version is 3.0.
Package clean-up: Cleaning up files at
'C:\DOCUME~1\Tom\LOCALS~1\Temp\WMC0001.tmp\Rollup3.exe'.

I then try to execute â??WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa.exeâ??, which
gives the message:
â??This upgrade can only be run on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.â??

The log file â??MCSetup_UI.logâ?? says:

This upgrade can only be run on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.
8:18:45 PM : start condition(s) failed.
8:18:45 PM : Exiting

I then try to run Mark Sallowayâ??s utility â??VersionSet.exeâ?? (dated 7/22/2006)
but it says:
â??Error during initialization: This software is for Windows XP Media Center
Edition only. Exception Message: Object reference not set to an instance of

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank-you for your response.
I followed the instructions on that microsoft webpage, which says to install
the
"Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005", which is file
â??WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa.exeâ??. It gave the error message:
â??This upgrade can only be run on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.â??
That error message must be wrong, since my computer runs Media Center 2005.

Your Media Center 'ident' value is likely wrong, most likely due to an
unnecessary installation of Service Pack 2 over Media Center 2005.

To fix this, download Mark Salloway's Media Center ident set util
http://www.salloway.org.uk/mediacenter/util/index.htm#ident

This will set the ident to the proper version.

Once you have done this, try re-installing Media Player 11.

Thank-you for your response.
I downloaded Mark Salloway's ident set utility, but when I ran it,
it gave the error message:
â??Error during initialization: This software is for Windows XP Media Center
Edition only.
Exception Message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.â??
The version of the Salloway utility I got was named "VersionSet.exe" and is
dated 7/22/2006.
Even Salloway's utility is unable to recognize my computer's Media Center.

Tom A.

Re: WMP 11 upgrade errors in Media Center by Gary

Gary

Wow

What a pain...
I see your problem... your version of Media Center indicates you only have
Update Rollup 1 for MCE2005...

So two things you need to do...

First, ensure the ident value is correct for your version of Media Center
I guess you'll have to do it manually...

Open regedit
Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media
Center
Edit the Ident value to 3.1

Once you've done that, you'll need to install Update Rollup 2 for MCE2005

This is available at http://support.microsoft.com/KB/900325

Reboot as necessary, and then goto windows update to get all the other media
center updates.

Then Install Media Player 11.

Hopefully that goes through without a hitch.

Thank-you for your responses.

According to my Registry Editor, it looks like the â??Media Centerâ?? folder
does not have any value for â??Identâ??.
I hope I am looking at the Registry Editor correctly.

On the left pane, I am highlighting the folder â??Media Centerâ?? (which is
under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\â??).
On the right pane, I only see two variables:
1) Name: (Default); Type: REG_SZ; Data:
(value not set);
2) Name: TunerContentRate Type: REG_DWORD Data: 0x0000003c (60)
The right pane does not have a variable named â??Identâ??.

On the left pane, under â??Media Centerâ??, there are four subfolders:
1) Display Settings;
2) Remote Controls;
3) Service;
4) Settings.

None of the four subfolders contains a variable named â??Identâ??.

If you want to use my registry file to add the entry... here it is..

Just merge it, and then proceed with Gary's instructions to install Update
Rollup 2, and so forth.
