at Start Up, tries to load XP Professional; then error says it needs a
CD-Rom. I don't have one for XP Professional and don't want it. Dell Tech
says to reinstall my Office XP Media Center 2003 - but my CD is
cracked.....how do I get a new one, or do I have to upgrade? If the latter,
to what?

You need to get a replacement from Dell.

I tend to think that, whatever I buy, 80% of the value is the software. So I
always make at least one copy of the disk(s) and put them in a folder with
all the other disks.

I do find MCE is a bit tempremental. Although it has been fairly stable for
a while now, the first year I had to reinstall afresh every 2-3 months.

I keep thinking that it would be a good idea to buy a disk image program
(like Acronis -

), so once I have a stable setup, I can just go back to that, without having
to do the whole rebuild thing.

MCE is Windows XP Pro, you would have two discs (if you have MCE 2005) --
one marked something like "Windows XP w/SP2", the other would say Media
Center.

There is no such thing as "Office XP Media Center 2003".

Even better I can personally recommend a Windows Home Server which will
automatically back up every system in the household every night (8 PCs in my
case). Any files in the backups can be easily accessed if they have been
deleted or are corrupt. In the worst case just need to boot from the restore CD
& re-image the PC back to the previous day's state when it was working.
