Having been bitten by a crash a matter of days after the warranty ran out, I
just learned that it is necessary to get and do some things in preparation.
If you have another PC, you may be able to do some now?
1) can you get a boot disk? you may be able to get the PC into DOS - and
then copy the important files off? Maybe do this by putting another disk into
the PC?
2) If your PC has failed, I would suspect memory. If there are a 2 or more
SIMMs in the PC, I'd take some out (they may need to be paired) and see if
you can get it to work - it might be slow, but could help you get it back.
3) I'd try memory diagnostics to see if that reveals a problem -
http://www.memtest.org/ or
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
4) If that doesn't help, I'd try disk diagnostics - find the manufacturer
and model of your hard disk, and see if they have a boot disk image with
diagnostics on. Alternatively, if you are getting a second disk, I'd take the
old one out and put that in, to see if I can rebuild from that, keeping my
files safe.
5) The big message to me was to partition my hard disk - 20-30Gb for my
system disk and the rest for data. That way, I can reformat and rebuild my
system disk, and in all probability, the data remains safe - something to
consider for this rebuild? (backup is a nice idea, but how many of us can say
we wouldn't be upset to lose stuff since the last backup?)
Good luck!
