my wife bought me a barebones system with an oem copy of windows xp media
center 2005. when i try to upgrade windows media center from version 10 to
version 11 i keep getting a message that i must have xp media center 2005
installed on my computer. my question is how come the disks that my wife
bought me can say windows media center 2005 but when i go and look at the
system properties it says 2002. is this a glitch or did i get a disk that is
printed with 2005 but is actually a copy of 2002?

What I guess that you are trying to upgrade Windows Media Player 10 to
Ver.11.

Ref:Why doesnâ??t Windows Media Player 11 install on Windows XP Media
Center Edition 2005?
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/installation.mspx

Regarding version check:-

Open Media center:-
Settings > General > About Media Center > Software Version
