Hello,

We have a dead old Dell computer.
If we get new computer from Dell with Vist Home installed.
Can we reinstall Windows XP Pro to new computer with dead Dell computer
license?

Thanks

First, this is a Media Center forum, your question would be better posted in
a general XP newsgroup.

To answer your question:

Can you? -- Yes, probably the disc will work since both are Dell systems.

May you? -- No, it is not a legal use of the XP license, that is an OEM
license that dies with the machine and can't be transferred.

If the dead Dell still has the old "image" format of OEM software, (loaded
quickly) then it would not work properly with a different machine.
The hardware drivers would not be appropriate for the new machine.

If you have a straight "Windows" disk, then it could format properly.
Windows takes a LONG time to install.

Whether it would work or not doesn't really matter, it's a violation of the
EULA.
Depending on the PC Windows can take 15 minutes or so to install, not long
at all.

If it took 15 minutes, it was an image, and not a clean install of Windows.

You are incorrect, I know the difference between an image and a clean
install, you apparently haven't done any clean installs on some of the
current hardware, takes no time at all.

I have done clean installs on new hardware (1.8GHz CPU).

It takes 15-20 minutes for Windows XP Pro to install. But you are not done
at that point.
You do have the OS installed, but none of your regular programs.

Installing your programs takes anywhere from one hour to 4-5 hours. Depends
on the exact set of programs you normally use.

A computer is not much good if all you have is the OS.

You forgot about all the patches from Windows Update that need to be done
before the OS is fully up to snuff. This can typically take several times as
long as the initial OS install.

All depends on your definition of install

That is true.
You do need to first install all of the Motherboard drivers, then Windows
Update.

If your OS is SP2, then at a minimum you will have the 300+ MB install of
SP3.
