I currently use my media center 2005 as a pvr for ota tv. With a linksys
extender, I can watch on my tv. Will I still be able to use this setup after
the digital conversion by hooking up a converter box to my computer?

Unfortunalely the extender (old model) does not allow for viewing from a
digital atsc tv tuner.

Yes.
Although I suggest that you get a combo Analog /OTA ATSC tuner so that on
your PC monitor you can have HD OTA digital channels and then use the
converter box to feed the downscaled HD programs to the combo card's analog
tuner for use with the extender via coax or s-video.

The big issue is that once the switchover to digital occurs and you start
using the converter box, it is the converter box that does the channel
changing, I'm not sure if MCE will have the ability to change it's channels
like it does with a cable or satellite STB. To explain better take this
scenario. You have a TV connected to rabbit ears, to watch a different
channel you use the TV remote to change it. After the 2009 switch you
install the converter box between the rabbit ears and the TV, the TV now
remains permanently on channel 3 or 4 and you change channels using the
converter box, so in order to record scheduled programs with MCE it has to
be able to change the channels of the converter box, not an issue with cable
or satellite, not sure about the digital to analog converter.

Regretfully I failed to consider EPG in MC with my previous recommendation
and I withdraw it.
The OP should stay with his Analog only tuner card.
He then should obtain a Converter STB that the MC EPG and IR
receiver/blaster will support and hopefully also has S-video out since
S-Video will provide better PQ the channel 3 or 4 RF.

The following forum contains lots of information on the Coupon Eligible

That's the issue i'm wondering. I've never done the set box setup, as I only
have antenna/ota broadcasts. I do however have the ir blaster that came with
the ir receiver. Would it be possible to set up the tv converter under the
set top box set up and then connect the ir blaster to change the channel? It
would also be nice to continue to use the tv guide to schedule recordings.
Otherwise, my first generation linksys extender will become useless for tv.

That's exactly what I suggest, you just have to make sure that the converter
box is one that is controllable with the MC IR blaster all makes and models
may not be.
You should still be able to watch and play programs with the extender like
you do today since the inputs from the converter are all in analog SD 480i
the same as your current OTA analog tuner is receiving.

any idea which boxes would be controllable with the ir blaster? Most of them
seem to have an ir remote.

Check out the AVS CECB forum that Curious gave you the link to in one of his
above posts to find out which ones have MC. I believe that is also possible
for the MC IR receiver to be "trained" to learn the IR codes for a STB IR
receiver but I do not know the details.

Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and bought the rca dtv converter.
Everything went smoothly. The only hang-up right now is althought the ir
blaster can control the box, it cannot get to the sub-channels. Apparently
it can't handle the "-" command on the remote to get to say 4-2 and always
goes to 4-1. I'll call it partial success unless microsoft comes up with
some kind of an update. It also has slowed the channel changing down
considerably.

Have you downloaded the guide for MC so you can use it?
If yes then you will have to add the sub channels to the guide manually
since the published MC guides do not contain sub channels.
Then you should be able to select 1041 or 1042 for 4-1 and 4-2.
