I now get the error message "Messenger Failure - You must install Windows
Messenger etc" every time I start Media Center. Messenger is still there, it
still runs separately, but I reinstalled it anyway - no good. I have Update
Rollout 2 for Media Center installed, but I reinstalled it anyway. No good.
This just started today after using media center daily for the last 3 years
on this computer, and I did not install anything new.

Any ideas?

I'd like to know the answer also - I started getting this error message
yesterday; up to that point no error.

I've seen a couple mentions of this here and there. It seems to have started
after last Tuesdays MS Updates. I'm having a similar deal where when I start
MC on my Extender it throws a message about needing to install Messenger.
Function is fine after clicking the error dialog away so I really haven't
looked into a solution yet.

When I do get the time I'll be looking at last Tuesdays updates
(12-Aug-2008) to see which of them might have to do with Messenger and if
uninstalling it helps. (mentioned in case somebody with more time on there
hands wants to look into it)

Same here. I started receiving the error message at Media center startu
3 days ago, after having used Media Center daily for 3 years. I have MC
2005 w/ service pack 3 installed.

Here is a list of recent MS Updates I believe have effected it. The
are the only changes made any time recently to my machine:

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB952954) Thursday, Augus
14, 2008 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB946648) Thursday, Augus

Windows XP Update for Windows XP (KB951072) Thursday, August 14, 200

Windows XP Security Update for Outlook Express for Windows X

After clicking OK to the error message, MCE appears to be workin
normally, so this seems to mostly be an annoyance more than anythin
else. I'll post back here if I notice any other problems because of it

I also have seen mentions elsewhere reporting this since the latest Patch
Tuesday. It happened on my MCE 2005 machine as well.

For the moment I have 'cured' the problem by doing a System Restore to a
restore point before the Patch Tuesday updates and _not_ allowed my computer
to redownload those updates.

Note: Before doing a System Restore I also tried installing Messenger 5.1
and this did not cure the problem. I could not find a 4.7 download on the
Microsoft site (only 4.6 or 5.1).

Clearly one of the Patch Tuesday updates screwed things up.

The annoying thing is I don't even use Messenger!

...Dear Microsoft, I might have upgraded to Vista _and_ bought some
Extenders but you stupidly chose to not include H.264 support in the TV Pack
(aka. Fiji) update. So I _still_ would not be able to get _any_ HDTV making
both Vista and the TV Pack a complete waste of money. At this rate you will
still not support HDTV in Europe by the _next_ Olympics.

Itâ??s the update for Windows Messenger 4.7 (946648).
If uninstall it the error goes a way, install it and error comes back.

I've had the same problem with messenger. Used Media center to watch TV for
over 2 years with no problem until now. How do you uninstall the update? I
found the C:\Windows\$NtUninstallKB946648$\spuninst.text document saying
where the upgrade apparently deleted 3 earlier KB946648 dll files from
C:\windows\$hf_mig$\kb946648 and copied a \msgsc.dll file to C:\program
files\messenger.

I found what it did, but how do I undo it? I did a system restore from Wed
13 of Aug. since the update was on the 14th, but still doesn't work.

Re: Windows Messenger error message in media center by LKoehn

Tue Aug 19 21:32:01 PDT 2008

I uninstalled the KB946648 file and unchecked the box but didn't know how to
reinstall the file. When I tried to connect to live TV, the little icon would
spin for a couple of seconds working to open the video window but then would
stop and nothing happened. I would click on the tv icon again but nothing
would happen till I closed MC and restarted the prog. Clicking on the TV icon
again did the same as before; the icon spins for 2 seconds and just stops.

I tried restoring the system to several days before the dreaded upgrade and
now when I try to open media center, it opens but when I click on a category
like TV, Radio, etc., Media Center closes entirely.

I've spent no less than 10 frustrating hours in the last 2 days
uninstalling, reinstalling, restoring different dates searching for answers.
This happens so much with MSoft, they try to fix one thing and mess up other
things. Also, is SP3 something that might fix the problem? I was going to
install it but the commentary says not to install it if it is not for at
least 10 systems. I don't understand.

Where do I go from here????????

Re: Windows Messenger error message in media center by LKoehn

I'm still having the same problem, not able to open live TV. One thing that I
noticed is that the error message referred to "Windows Messenger" and all the
while I have been running "Windows Live Messenger". Until the 14/08 upgrade,
everything worked just fine. I thought maybe if I went back to just plain
"Messenger" and not the "Live Messenger", it might straighten out the
problem. Still the same. I read in a different discussion group, someone said
"Live Messenger" doesn't work with M. C. I had no problem.

As I mentioned in an earlier message, with or without the KB946648 upgrade,
the TV doesn't open. Restoring to several days before the upgrade was worse;
the entire Media Center would shut down as soon as I tried to open it. The
only thing I knew to do was Restore the System back to the setting after the
upgrade. At least I can play music and listen to the radio and do about
everything except what I really used the most: TV.

Can anyone give me another suggestion?????

I found a registry entry DWORD called fEnableIM at
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media
Center\Settings\IMSettings

Setting it to 0 should disable IM.

Billdoubleyou:

I think I have a similar problem. I started mid August with Word an
Office XP error message 0x80070641.
I get 'do you want to install" when shutting down and say yes each tim
but it keeps coming up every time I shut down. I have downloaded bot
directly at microsoft site but neither will install.
Not sure what you mean by Message Centre - sorry, I am a technica
neophyte. Nor do I understand clicking OK. I have Service Pack 3 on m
system if that is of any help.

Any ideas from anyone? I have a Reinstallation CD Microsoft Window X
Home Edition Including Serivce Pack 2 from Dell dated 2004 but do no
have original CD as I moved recently

What is meant by Media Center is "Windows Media Center", it is a MS
operating system and is the focus of this newsgroup.

If you are using Windows XP, you should post your question on a different
forum, probably the XP General forum or perhaps an Office forum for
more/better help.

I am running XP Media Center 2005 w/Rollout 2 and Service Pack 3.

I think I have done everything that has been suggested in this discussion
group.

I followed R. Miller's advice of deleting the update for Windows Messenger
4.7 (946648). The error message went away and I now have the update
reinstalled.

I followed Gary Tsang's blog suggestion:
-Under the fEnableIM DWORD value, the change was made for the value from '1'
to '0'.
-I now have a new key called 'ehshell.exe'with a new DWORD value called
'AllowMessengerExecHandleFailure' that is assigned a value of '1'

It might have been a mistake, but I deleted Windows Messenger 4.7 and
installed WM 5.1. I have tried to locate WM 4.7 to reinstall and try to go
back to the beginning but don't know where to find it to download and
install. Maybe it wouldn't make any difference.

I wish I could respond like the others saying the problem is solved, but I
still can't open the TV option in XP Media Center. The little rotating icon
just spins for a couple of seconds and then stops. Nothing happens.
Everything was working fine until the 8/14 update. It's been over 2 weeks and
I'm really frustrated with this.

I'd suggest that your TV problems are independent of your Windows Messenger
error. You've since solved your Windows Messenger error message, but your
tv issues remain.

Someone else on my blog posted that they had an similar issue.

Perhaps the fix that they tried might work as well...

Richard,
I attempted to uninstall, but it tells me I can't uninstall it. So I did
Gary Tsang's registry hack, and I don't get the error message now. But I
still can't get to Live TV, for about the first 30 seconds I can move around
on the intro screen, but then it hangs hard. I can only do a Ctrl-Alt-Del at
this point to get out of Media Center.

If you are having issues with your LiveTV, it is a totally separate issue
from the Windows Messenger error (even though it may have happened at the
same time, the causes are almost certainly entirely different and
independent in nature).
