I haven't updated since I bought computer 2003. Now I need to do so to
maintain an updated free anti virus programme, but keep getting failure to
install and can't find a way around it. Can anyone advise, please

Thanks

This Newsgroup if for the Microsoft Media Center computers. Window XP home
is not a Media Center computer.

You also did not provide enough information. Such as what version of XP home
do you actually have?

XP home has several versions and upgrades since 2003.
If you look at the Control Panel > System, General Tab you will be able to
see if you have Service pack 1 or Service pack 2 or Plain Home.

If you do not have Service pack 2 installed, you can find the Service Pack 2
here.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/SP2/default.mspx

You must have at least Service Pack 2 for the Windows updates to work.

The current level of service packs is version 3.
