    - Help w/ windows media center crash and windows media player 11 cra Hi, I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. I am trying to add my xbox 360 as an extender with no success because WMC keeps crashing. I have User Account Control and Windows Firewall turned off during the process. After entering the access code, I click some options and then click next and it should start connecting at that point. However, the loading circle appears and eventually WMC crashes and restarts. There's no error message. It just freeze and crashes. I decided to instead enable media sharing thru Windows Media Player 11. However, when I click on Media Sharing, the program freezes. No loading circle, just a frozen window. If I try to click on it, Windows beeps. There is no error message and I have to open task manager to End the program (which is not responding.) My guess is that these two problems are related. Any ideas on how to fix? I am sure it is not a firewall issue because I turned off the firewall and still encountered these errorrs.     - Caan't get into Safe Mode I am getting the following error msg when trying to start my Windows XP Media Center PC. I am unable to get into safe mode or to the system recovery console, can someone please advise as to how to get to the safe mode...pressing F8 is not doing anything at all and I do not have the OS CD to get into the recovery console. The OS was pre-installed on my PC when I bought it. This started after I increased the page size in the control panel and rebooted. I need to login in safe mode and undo the changes but can't get into safe mode at all. PLEASE HELP. The error msg I am getting is: Windows cannot create a temporary profile directory. This may be caused by insufficient security rights. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator. DETAIL: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested sequence.     - Wheres my sky channel? Ive recently set up a media center computer using a hauppauge hvr 1100 that has free to air digital TV channels. These channels come through the ariel which then goes through my sky box through a RF composite cable and into my TV tuner card.     - OK to change CPU with OEM XP MCE 2005? Hello All: I have a homebuilt pc with MCE2005 OEM and would like to upgrade the CPU. I don't want to buy the CPU if an OEM version does not permit the change. I read in another post that you can change the CPU with Vista OEM but don't know if a CPU change would invalidate my XP MCE 2005 license. The current motherboard & bios support the new CPU so I have no hardware problem. Since originally installing the O.S. I have installed 4 more hard drives and a second DVD drive.     - Windows Media Player Using WMP 11.0 with Media Center Edition I find that playing MP3's from my Hard Drive freezes the computer to the point that it must be turned off manually at the tower. I'm guessing that the program freezes at the same point, usually the 3rd song in a sequence. Using Real Player seems to do the same thing.     - Importing video into Windows Movie Maker I'm having problems inporting video clips into movie maker from 'my video' which show as 'mpeg' files, taken on a Sony handycam. Initially I had an error saying that the correct codec was required. I then disabled all the filters but still cannot import the video clips as I now get a message saying 'undefinable error'.     - Media Centre vs XP Pro Hi, I just got a new Dell XPS 720 and need some assurance about what I got for an OS. My invoice says "Microsoft Windows XP Media Centre Edition 2005, English" I ran a dxdiag and I got "Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_qfe.070227-2300)" Windows splash screen at start-up just says XP (not Pro or MCE) General tab of System Folder says Media Centre Edition Version 2002 Service pack 2. I do have a Media Centre shortcut on my desk top and the version under the settings tab tells me its Edition 2005 Version 5.1.2715 (xpsp(wmbla).051215-1116) Update Rollup 2. So what's my operating system? Is it XP Pro or MCE? Why does the General tab in my System folder not say 2005? Should the splash screen have something more than just XP? Thanks for your help.     - Media Center keeps closing due to a problem Hey gang, I have been getting messages, even without Media Center open, that the " Windows Media Update has stopped working ". When I choose to check online for a solution, I do not get any feedback. So I thought I would open Media Center, to see if I could see something there in the options that might clue me in. After opening Media Center and starting to navigate through it, it closes immediately, due to a problem. It does this as soon as I start clicking on things within Media Center, just won't stay open. I tried a google search, and about all I saw on repairing Media Center, was running sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt. I tried this, and it ran and did not find any damaged files. Any ideas, on what I might could do to repair this? I really don't use Media Center, but it is annoying me more than anything, that it does not work, at this point.     - Vista Ultimate Edition - "Tuner Not Found" *** Originally Posted 14-Feb-2008 *** 3rd request For Assistance - Somebody must know of this problem? After some Windows updates run on my PC on the 14th Feb 2008, my Media Centre has failed with the message "Tuner Not Found". It's been 3 months without any working "solutions". I believe it is possible to do with the latest Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista (KB947172) as I am finding this "Tuner Not Found" ... complaint everywhere since then. I d/loaded & installed this update on Thursday evening 14th Feb 2008 and have had this problem only since then. I am in the process of seeking a solution.... so far all I am finding is a lot of ill-informed guesswork from perhaps too well-meaning people. My PC is a Dell Dimension E-520 with Vista Ultimate 32 bit edition, and a Dell oem AverMedia M779 Hybrid tuner card. See full hardware specs below. It has been running fine since July 07, apart from some localised issues with the Guide which have been resolved since December. So far, and without success, I have: 1) Checked physical connection of the tuner card through to the TV antennae point. Everything is fine and working. Device Manager indicates everything is okay. 2) Restore failed, as previous restore point had been corrupted and not fixed. 3) Un-installed the last relevant update (Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista KB947172)... no change. 4) Turned-off firewall, re-installed update, switched firewall back on.... no change. 5) Uninstalled AverMedia drivers then reinstalled. No change 6) And as a last resort I have now Edited registry using regedit (and after backup) and found this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Media Center\Service\Video\Tuners\{TunerID} Deleted the tuners subkeys. Checked Device Manager and removed the tv card drivers then restarted PC. Upon restarting reinstalled the tv card drivers. I took note of the tuners registered at the above key and made sure my tuners re-appeared under TunerID. Suggestions read in this and other forums include: 1) replace tuner card... pointless if working correctly (tested in another pc) 2) Backup, re-format hdd and re-install Vista do not answer the original problem. There should be no need for this after a simple Windows update - surely? Maybe I am wrong, but it occurs to me that if this latest Microsoft Cummulative update appeared to have generated a lot of cries for help globally, and it appears not directed at any particular hardware configuration, and specifically any brand of tuner card, then the problem must lie with the software including this latest update of changes made to the registry as a result of it..... I also have a brand new Dell Inspiron 1520 notebook pc with Vista Home Premium & a Dell oem USB tuner. I have not downloaded the update to this until I have fixed the Desktop PC and so far it continues to work correctly. At this point I do not wish to risk stuffing around with having 2 pcs not working correctly. In the meantime, I shall continue my search. as their must be an answer. Microsoft' s web-site has not yielded any glimmer of hope just yet. May be someone from Dell or the community has experienced this and knows what the fix is.     - Digital signal Ok, so this is somewhat of a followup to a post I put up a week or so in regards to dual digital tuner cards. Assuming anyone who is buying a new tuner card basically from this point on is considering the migration to digital-only next February, is anyone considering anything special in regards to tuner cards? Here's a bit about my setup, and maybe those of you who have put some thought into this can toss me some ideas. I've got a Visio 37" LCD in my home office, which is hooked up to my VMC through VGA. I get cable direct from the wall, which is split off and goes to my VMC PC (single Analog tuner card) and also to my TV RF input so I can get around the single-program record/view limitation of a single tuner card. When I bypass the VMC box and go direct to my TV, I can pick up HD programming for all the network channels (NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, etc). However, when I attempted to configure a borrowed digital tuner card (it was dual tuner analog/digital), it wasn't picking up any digital programming. This has me a bit concerned, in that I don't want to find myself SOL next February. I have a self-built VMC box, so it's not OEM to a manufacturer. I'm pretty flexible on what I can add, though I am somewhat PCI limited. Of course, I'd prefer to upgrade to a PCIe tuner rather than stick with PCI. Anyone got any thoughts on how I should proceed? Ideally I'd love to get HD and Digital, but I know that VMC has HD limitations. I do, however, want to continue to use the VMC guide and interface, and not a third-party app to watch tv. Thanks all!     - dma My dma downgrades for my dvd/cd burner and the audio becomes jittery on playback of movie dvd's and audio cd's after about 6 months use. I have followed all suggestions on the ms knowledge base regarding reseting from pio to ultra dma and modifiying the registry.     - Is it possible to store the channel sequence ? Media Center PC using Vista Home Premium. Able to scan all available TV channels with the tuner, can download the EPG. I set the channels on my Media Center in the same sequence as I have them on my TV using Media Center settings. However, sometimes this sequence is lost. I still have all (or most) of the channels, I can always find them back by the tuner but they are in a different order. By consequence I occasionally record the wrong program. I have set the different channels back in the normal sequence a few times now, so my question is if it is not possible to store this sequence somewhere more permanently ?     - Time Warner channel line up change and MCE PCs in Ohio HI all, I've spoken to the morons and Time Warner to the point that I want to pull my hair out. After being transfered back and forth to a number of different tech support agents, it seems that no one over there has a clue what a Media Center Edition PC that is equipt with a TV Tuner card is. Can anyone in this groupd please help? Time warner recenlty changed their entire channel line up in my area. For example HBO use to be channel 201 and now it is 603 and channel 201 is now USA Network. I am able to watch the channels appropriately, but Media Center Guide's channels are still matching up with the old lineup. Guide still shows channel 201 as HBO while it should be USA, etc. I have tried to re-setup the Media Center Guide and re-download the line ups, but after the download says it finished successfully, I still get the exact incorrect lineup that I had before. Can anyone offer some help with this so that I don't have to manually edit like 200 some channels.     - TV Tuner My Windows Media Center was successfully recording my television shows for several months. Recently it stopped recording and the message I got was "TUNER NOT AVAILABLE The tuner is currently in use by another application or is not working. I did the channel scanning thing but it doesn't pick up any channel, however when i do it manuelly i do able to choose composite which has signals from my ps2. But when I hit next, it says i don't have some hardward so i've been forced to go back. I turn on live tv. i ahve some channel going (i have no cabel so all i see is dust) but how do i switch to composite channel to play my PS2.     - Xbox 360 extender not found Hi All - I am having a peculiar challenge setting up MCE with my 360. I am running 2 media centre pc's (one laptop and one desktop) on the same network as the xbox 360. The pc's are both wireless but the xbox is wired to a netgear rangemax router. Both pc's can see the xbox (with sharing on) and the pc's can see each other fine. The xbox was able to connect adn run media centre from the laptop (which is not what I wanted) but not the desktop. I have succesfully deleted the laptop from the xbox computer list, and switched it off, but the xbox will now not recognise the desktop on the network and hence Media center on the desktop cannot find nor add the extender.     - downloadhost Everytime I try to download an update or install a program I get a notice saying "widows cannot open file MSND downloadhost windows needs to know what program created it" even when its a windows update. Then it says I can go on the web to a site to fix it, and I try that, but I end up with the same message. So I'm going in circles.     - DVB-T (Freeview) Tuning in New Zealand My Vista MCE cannot find any digital channels when I try to tune it in. It finds analogue channels okay. Tuner card is hybrid Hauppauge HVR-1300. Card is Vista compatible. Also, other 3rd part software (DVBviewer) can find channel okay - so I think it is Vista issue.     - Media Center missing components Help I installed the web guide software on my 64bit Vista PC, it work for about 20 minutes gave an error then once I rebooted Media Center could not find any recorded shows and reports missing or corrupt componants Windows Media Center component registration may have failed. I tried rerunning the setup within Media Center but eshell reports a failure in the application log. I have also tried doing a Restore point and that doesn't seem to fix it. I have to select Cable and It find all channels. On the new one it doesn't ask me and select Antenna (analog) by default so I get only 3 channels.... How can I force asking me the signal...     - Vista Media Center Schedule not working I have a new Vista PC. The Hauppaugge card works fine for view live TV. I can change channels and all seems fine. But, I cannot get the scheduled recording to work. I use the guide and find somthing to record and set it up to record. It looks like it should work. But, the scheduled recording just does not do anything. There is no error. I have tried this with Media Center running, I have tried it with Media Center not running.     - Group Policy security and system shut down! Hello, My hard drive failed yesterday. I got a message on the startup screen saying to back it up and replace it. I purchased a new drive and I backed up the old one today. I used Acronis True Image. I got some errors during backup and I had to reset the Admin and user passwords because Windows did not recognize the old passwords. I used a program called "Offline NT Password & Registry Editor".     - Xbox 360 cannot see my network drives on WHS I have yet to find a solution to this. I have all my movies and music on my WHS. When i try to access them from XBox360 through media center, it cannot see them. The music is in the default music folder, which has Guest read access. The movies are in a folder called Movies which also has guest read access. When i browse to music on media center it cannot see the sared folders. When i try to play a movie through My Movies 2, it disaplys the path of the movie, ok but if i try to play it, media complains with "path not found". Has anyone suceeded here?     - Partitioning ? Hello, I have XP on my C drive and i have another spare 200GB HD attached internally to the PC, is shows up as drive S. What i'm wanting to know is: I have some backup files on the spare S drive (about 150GB worth), leaving 50GB spare on it. 1) Can i put a partition on spare drive S without losing the 150GB worth of backup files i already have on there ? (so it will become 160GB (backup) / 40GB partitioned) 2) There is 150GB worth of backup, so if i partition it to 160GB (backup stuff) and 40GB spare, can i then put Windows Vista on the partitioned 40GB bit of the HD and choose my operating system on startup ? ie. have a choice on start up whether to go into XP or Vista ? 3) If i later decide i want more than the 40GB partitioned on the Vista Partition, can i move all the backup (150GB) stuff to a different HD and then repartition to say 100GB / 100GB without losing Vista ?     - DVD Playback I have been getting conflicting comments on this problem. Which DVD type and manufacturer do I use to be able to not only burn, but playback on a stand alone dvd player. The latest I was told to use was Memorex DVD-RW. I can burn easy enough but will only play back on the computer, not any other dvd player. I am using an XPS 400 with Windows XP Media Center 2005. All S-video is 4:3 SD 480i video as is the coax feed from your DirecTV
tuner. So your STB has cropped and downscaled any widescreen broadcasts you
have. If you tell your STB that you have a 4:3 display then it should
letterbox the widescreen programs instead of cropping them.
