I have MCE 2002 (as reported in control panel/system) on my WinXp pro
SP2. I recently purchased a 40 in HDTV. My computer is upstairs while my
TV is downstairs. What are my options, if any, for watching content that
I record on my upstairs computer on my new downstairs TV? This is all
new to me, so simple answers, if possible, would be appreciated. Thanks.

You could purchase and xBox or standalone Media Center Extender device and
put that downstairs attached to the TV and network it to the Media Center
computer upstairs. This would essentially give you remote control of the
Media Center for watching recorded TV and controlling the Media Center
computer.

You could also use another PC/laptop attached to the TV and share the
recorded TV folder on the Media Center PC and network the two computers.
This would allow you to watch the show with Media Player on the downstairs
PC, but you would not be able to control the Media Center functions.

You could move the PC downstairs as a third option.

BTW, you can't have MCE 2002 if you have SP2 loaded, at a minimum you would
have MCE 2004. 2002 is the underlying version of XP Pro, to find the version
of MCE, you must look in the MC interface, Settings Menu, About. You need to
have 2005 to use the extenders.

Jaime,

Thanks for the prompt reply. You're right. Within MCE it says I have MCE
2005 roll up 2. I didn't know I even had that.

I can't afford to get an xbox 360 but I do have a laptop. I will explore
sharing the folder where recorded programs are stored. The laptop has an
S-video out port and the TV has an S-video in port, so I think that will
be the only way I could connect the two together. And I guess I need
audio cables as well. Thanks for the tip.

You will have to network the computers together using the Ethernet ports.

If you want to view HDTV you will need a HDTV capable MCE and connect it to
the TV via HDMI.
