Hi. is it possible to put a tuner on one vista pc with mediacenter and then
let this pc communicace with another pc with mediacenter letting this number
2 pc user the tv tuner from pc 1....or do i need an extender instead of pc 2?

If yes, how do I do that?

You need an Extender or XBox 360. There is no software version of the Media
Center Extender.

Ok.

Every mediacenter pc do then need a tv tuner to record (and see) tv then?

Can an extender do anything by itself without having connection to media
center pc?

Extenders don't do much other than 'extend' what you can do at the MC PC.
One of the current ones for Vista, made by Linksys does have a DVD player in
it. Makes sense to me, as it is tough to put the DVD in the MC PC when it is
in another room.

There as a web based 'extender' of sorts called WebGuide
http://www.asciiexpress.com/webguide/ It lets you stream live TV over a
network to your browser or to Media Player. Note that you only can watch as
many shows as you have tuners. If you are watching remotely, you obviously
can't watch locally.

As Sven said, the Linksys DMA2200 has a built-in DVD that works outside of
the MCX UI. The DMA2100 doesn't. The D-Link DSM-750 has Windows Media
Connect functionality, outside of the MCX UI, so you can play music, movies
and pictures. The XBox 360 has similar functionality outside of the MCX UI.

The work around for sharing TV from one MCE PC to another is to share the
Recorded TV folder on one machine, and add it as a folder under the Videos
section of one or more "other" MCE PC's. As long as the content isn't copy
protected, you can watch Recorded TV from the host machine on a guest
machine this way. But there is no direct access to Live TV.

Other work arounds include programs like Orb, www.orb.com and others, that
can directly access the tuner on the host PC and you don't need an MCE PC to
act as a guest. Any PC with a compatible web browser can watch live and/or
recorded TV from the MCE PC.

Hi!

Doug says that you should share a folder on one PC and add it as a
folder on another PC. Did I understand this correctly? And in that
case, how do I add a share as a folder on the other PC?

On the computer you wish to share.
Right Click the folder, Sharing and Security, on the sharing tab, set the
necessary parameters.

That makes the folder visible on the network. On the other computer(s) look
for the computer and folder in My Network Places.

Thanks! I was more asking if there is any way to get that share as a
folder on the other computer. That is not as a drive. My scenario: I
would like to let one application on one computer work in its c:\work\
directory, but that this directory is really a share on another host.
It is possible to map a physical disk to c:\work instead of E: for
example, but I cant make this work for a share. Doug mentioned
something about adding as a folder, and I just wanted to check if this
was what I was looking for.

It is also possible to setup a Network drive on the local computer.
You can map a remote computer and folder to a drive letter.

If you use the complete path to the file, any program that is network aware
can use a file on another computer. You would setup the program to use a
default folder that is mapped to another computer.

The path looks like this:
\\Kitchen\d\Medicine

\\Kitchen is the name of the remote computer
\d is the drive on that computer
\Medicine is the folder on that computer and drive.

You can then see any file in that folder from the local computer.
