    - Windows Backup Hello. I need to backup some important data on a Windows XP machine. The data will be in use (open) during the backup. Is windows backup capable of backing up data that is in use without corrupting it? I guess I'm asking if it has some sort of open file technology.     - Vista Media Center Schedule not working I have a new Vista PC. The Hauppaugge card works fine for view live TV. I can change channels and all seems fine. But, I cannot get the scheduled recording to work. I use the guide and find somthing to record and set it up to record. It looks like it should work. But, the scheduled recording just does not do anything. There is no error. I have tried this with Media Center running, I have tried it with Media Center not running.     - Group Policy security and system shut down! Hello, My hard drive failed yesterday. I got a message on the startup screen saying to back it up and replace it. I purchased a new drive and I backed up the old one today. I used Acronis True Image. I got some errors during backup and I had to reset the Admin and user passwords because Windows did not recognize the old passwords. I used a program called "Offline NT Password & Registry Editor". When going into users accounts to create new passwords for Admin and users I get a shutdown error, the error window states; ================================== "This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. System will shut down in 60 secs. C:\WINDOWSystem32\Isses.exe terminated unexpectedly..." "with code -1073741819" (on most instances) "with code -1 (on other instances)" ===================================== When I try to reset the passwords through Local policies I receive a little massage, "The settings that apply to this machine could not be determined. The error returned when trying to receive these settings from the local security policy database (%windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb) was: The parameter is incorrect. All local security settings will be displayed, but no indication will be given as to whether or not a give security setting is defined by Group Policy. Any local security settings modified through this user Interface may subsequently be overwritten by domain -level policies." Can this be fixed? Any help is greatly appreciated Thank you. P.S.     - Xbox 360 cannot see my network drives on WHS I have yet to find a solution to this. I have all my movies and music on my WHS. When i try to access them from XBox360 through media center, it cannot see them. The music is in the default music folder, which has Guest read access. The movies are in a folder called Movies which also has guest read access. When i browse to music on media center it cannot see the sared folders. When i try to play a movie through My Movies 2, it disaplys the path of the movie, ok but if i try to play it, media complains with "path not found". Has anyone suceeded here?     - Partitioning ? Hello, I have XP on my C drive and i have another spare 200GB HD attached internally to the PC, is shows up as drive S. What i'm wanting to know is: I have some backup files on the spare S drive (about 150GB worth), leaving 50GB spare on it. 1) Can i put a partition on spare drive S without losing the 150GB worth of backup files i already have on there ? (so it will become 160GB (backup) / 40GB partitioned) 2) There is 150GB worth of backup, so if i partition it to 160GB (backup stuff) and 40GB spare, can i then put Windows Vista on the partitioned 40GB bit of the HD and choose my operating system on startup ? ie. have a choice on start up whether to go into XP or Vista ? 3) If i later decide i want more than the 40GB partitioned on the Vista Partition, can i move all the backup (150GB) stuff to a different HD and then repartition to say 100GB / 100GB without losing Vista ?     - DVD Playback I have been getting conflicting comments on this problem. Which DVD type and manufacturer do I use to be able to not only burn, but playback on a stand alone dvd player. The latest I was told to use was Memorex DVD-RW. I can burn easy enough but will only play back on the computer, not any other dvd player. I am using an XPS 400 with Windows XP Media Center 2005.     - Media Center / Photo Printing I have noticed that when printing photos from within the Media Center UI the quality is significantly poorer when compared to the same photo printed directly out of Windows.     - Cant burn recorded show ? I recorded am episode of the Sopranos on A&E ( doesn't day copy protected anywhere) ( done this many times before ) and when I go to burn a DVD to watch in the next room it doesn't get past 1% yet I can watch it on the PC.     - finalizing photo burns I am new to burning photos onto cds to share with others. I have XP MC, but did not use MC to burn the photos. I just sent them to my DVD/CD drive and they burned just fine. The photos are there because I checked the disks after burning.     - Recovering Safe mode Hi, Recently My PC was infected by virus/spyware.I have Bitdefender Total Security 2008 which deleted the virus but after that i could not boot into safe mode(normal mode is still working good and safe mode was working before bitdefender deleted it) I am not sure what happened. Whenever i try to get into safe mode, it loads all the drivers and shows the black screen with "safemode" letters on each corner of the screen but doesnt beyond that.(no errors/warnings) My question is how can i debug what is happening after drivers loaded?how can i recover the safe mode?     - CPU Usage spiking high Hello! As of a couple of weeks ago, my computer has been running very slowly. Loading webpages takes about 15 secs. It isnt my internet connection. I have up to date windows software, as well. When I open windows task manager, under performance it showsmy CPU Usage at 100% when I'm trying to go on web pages. Under Processes, it shows "SAService" going up to 90%-100% CPU usage when I'm going onto pages like Youtube. It says under "username" that it is a "SYSTEM" process. But I believe it is part of Mcafee, not a windows thing (is it safe to end this process? I've never had this problem before). "explorer.exe" and "iexplorer.exe" also spike very high in CPU usage, when I'm trying to open new windows, or search on the internet, or what have you.     - All Viacom Add-ins (e.g. TurboNick) Now Missing from VMC! This is a topic I have been chasing for a month now, ever since I updated to Vista SP1 and installed a v2 Media Center Extender for the kids; however, I think it is completely unrelated to either of these events. All of the Viacom-based add-ins no longer appear in the Online Media / Explore menu under VMC. This includes TurboNick, Comedy Central Motherload, MTV, VH1, etc. Unfortunately, I never saved one of these to the Programs menu, so have no idea if this might have avoided this issue. The biggest hit here is TurboNick, since that was intended to be a nice source of programming for the kids. We recently "cut the cable" and went to all OTA HD. Note that TurboNick still shows up through a regular browser, but Motherload has been removed altogether. So, I will assume that someone at Microsoft may have some clue as to what is going on here, especially considering that these add-ins were featured parts of the Vista release, and since all mention of them has been removed from the Vista description pages where they used to appear. My questions are simple: 1. Why did Viacom pull their add-ins out of Vista? Especially for TurboNick VMC seemed to be a part of their strategy. 2. Are they ever coming back? 3. Is there a way to put them back manually? Note that in terms of #3 at least one poster has found a way to manually replace the MTV and VH1 add-ins. The address turbonick.com/mce also continued to bring up an MCML file a couple of weeks ago, but has now been updated to redirect to the normal TurboNick page. All of this makes it clear that SOMEONE knows what is going on here. I would just appreciate as a loyal media center user to be "in the loop" and know whether something better is coming, or whether I just need to give up on ever watching a Viacom product again.     - Task Manager is gone I installed a utility from PC magazine that replaced Task Manager. It seemed to slow down my PC so I uninstalled it. But Task Manager does not respond to Crl-Alt-Del and I can't right click on the Task Bar and get it to start. I found a site that provided instructions to reinstall Task Manager but I could not find all the files needed to complete the install. I'm running XP Pro on a 3 year old Dell XPS. Any quick fixes?     - Converting desktop XO to Windows XP Media Center with DirecTV rece Hi. I have an older XP machine that I am replacing. Rather than dispose of the tower PC, I thought "why not upgrade it to an XP WMC operating system and use it with my non-DVR DirectTV receiver. Then I don't have to buy a new DVR and I still get some mileage out of my existing PC. What I can't tell after reviewing the microsoft.com website is how/if a XP WMC box connects to the DirecTV receiver, how it controls the guide and channel selection on me DirecTV receiver.     - minimized MCE screen.... When minimized in the corner of my monitor, the screen used to be wide screen 16: 9, now it is square 4: 3. I have tried to drag it by it's side to stretch it out, but it becomes a bigger square. No item under MCE settings seem to work either. Please, does anyone know how to fix?     - Recovery I tried to do a total system recovery. I got as far as the final step where it say's the screen will go blank for a minute then it will restart. When it went to restart, it said please wait, and just stayed on that screen for about 12 hours.     - Access Denied in trying to edit the Comment section on Properties Re Windows XP and photo files. I have some photo files (.tif) that when I right click, open Properties, go to Summary Tab, and add some text to the Comments, I get the message "Changes to Summary Properties Could not be saved; access has been denied. The file may be marked read-only or may be in use by another application" when I try to save it. The files are not read only (verified in cmd window/ attributes). So some other program has locked the ability to enter summary information. Does anyone know how to "reset" these files so I can edit the summary information? I have tried resaving them, copying them to another computer, but the denial seems to travel with the file. If I convert them to a jpg, I have access again, but technically, it is better for me not to convert because it automatically compresses the files which I don't want.     - MCE 2005 - No Surround Sound 5.1 I have Windows XP Media Center 2005, a Creative X-Fi sound card connected to a Logitech 5.1 surround sound speaker system using Sonicâ??s Cineplay DS VideoDecoder 4.0 version 4.0.0.46 as verified by Windows SP Video Decoder checkup Utility. The utility has a green check mark under MCE Compatible. When I play a DVD through Media Player 11, I can hear sound through all 6 speakers perfectly. When I play the same DVD through the Media Center, I am getting only stereo (sound through 2 speakers and I believe the sub-woofer). I have played with the audio setting in Media Center â?? setting it to 5.1 in the general settings MCE Setup, of course that wonâ??t work, so Iâ??ve also tried the registry update that Aaron has suggested since MC Rollup 2 appears to affect the registry entries and not accessed again the general setup in the audio setting of Media Center to the 5.1 speaker setting. Iâ??ve tried rebooting after various changes, but I cannot get the sound from the 5 speakers, yet it works correctly in Media Player 11. Is this normal? What am I missing here.     - Getting "DVD Library" option to show up with Vista Media Center + SP1 I have a new HP m9200t machine with BluRay/HD drive and I'm trying to get the "DVD Library" option to show up on the Vista Media Center interface without luck. This usually involves a simply registry change specified in this KB article from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930526 According to a thread on thegreenbutton, the HP Play DVD option in the interface is not letting the "DVD Library" option show up in Vista SP1 because of some other registry key that forces the "DVD Library" to stay hidden. Does anyone know what this registry key is or how to enable the "DVD Library" menu item.     - Can't read from Sandisk SDHC 8gb card Just installed the hotfix (WindowsXP-KB934428-v3-x86-ENU.exe) from MS and my computer still won't read my new 8gb Sandisk SDHC card. The computer has a built in card reader and is using Windows XP. It reads a 2gb card fine. I can plug the camera into a USB port and can read the card and download the pictures fine.     - Motherboard upgrade? Hello there, I just upgraded my motherboard on my PC (alone with new CPU). For the most part everything works great except 2 issues. Issue number 1: I can no longer play TV on media center, I get an error message stating that the files required to play TV are not installed correctly and to reinstall them. Anyone run into this issue when upgrading motherboards on Vista Ultimate 64bit edition? Is it possible I just need to reinstall the drivers for the USB tuner (Arctech). Issue number 2: Perhaps incidently to issue 1, but I figure I'll post it here in the event it's some how vegly related. When I try to listen to music on Zune through my 1 pass or even music I purchased I get an error stating that I need to media rights needs to be reset on this PC. I've followed several different directions with no luck. The Zune.net website points me to a page where the media rights software can be updated which would rest it, but I get a javascript error when I navigate to that page and it doesn't do whatever it's supposed to.     - Unable to move cursor between screens when MCE is in full screen m When I try and run MCE in full screen mode on a two monitor based XP MCE 2002 system, I am unable to move the monitor to the second monitor. I have to minimise MCE to be able to move the cursor back into the other display to do any work via the second display. Any suggestions? I was looking at the news of a Media Center update for Vista, and I had also seen Apple TV's arrangement, and was interested (it has much better marketplace integration and digital media accessability ). I then took a look at Vista Media Center, and thought about how it could be brought up to speed for the modern reality of media - we are increasingly holding video, music, and pictures on ever increasing hard drives, and this media needs to be cataloged and organized. Looking at the default options in VMC, I would prefer to have the following: Main Menu: Pictures + Videos - stuff I took with my camera *More Pictures - browse shared images on the network if you have a home network *Picture Library - browse your image library *Video Library - browse your home videos *Search - find an image based on tags or on date taken Games - mini-games for use within Media Center, kind of like Mario Party-style or iPod game style games *More Games - buy or download for free new games from the game market *Game Library - pick a game from the ones you now own. *Play random - picks a game at random Now Playing + Playlists *Playlists - tv, movie, and music playlists here, sortable by type (tv/movie/music) *Now Playing - currently playing media and what's in queue *Create Playlist - create a playlist of media, tv, music, movies, or all mixed TV - watch, record, playback, purchase *Explore - free TV shows from content providers with advertisements. So if NBC allows you to watch a show online, you can click 'NBC', then the show name, and go watch it, streaming. *More TV - similar to iTunes, but allows you to browse through available shows, purchase them, see clips, etc. within VMC. You can subscribe to a show (purchase a season pass), and as new episodes come out, they download for you and show up as 'new' in your TV library *TV Library - just like music library, organized by show, season, then episode. When viewing a series, you can 'play all' to play the whole series from start to finish (no interruption to 'delete'). When viewing a season, you can 'play season' to play the whole season immediately. Underneath this 'play all/season' you would see 'add to queue' to put the series/season/episode into the now playing playlist. This is viewed as banners, thumbnails, or DVD covers. When viewing a description of a show in your library, say 'Smallville,' if you highlight 'Tom Welling' on the stars' listing, you get a new page listing other things he's starred in, like 'The Fog.' If it's in your library, then there's a link next to it saying 'Play' otherwise, 'Buy this Movie' (from the Zune Marketplace). *Internet TV - see the channels you subscribed to online, like RTL or Japan TV, and get new channels here too. *Search - search for a show based on actor, director, writer, genre, keyword from the description, year, etc. in your library. If the library sees episodes missing, they will appear in the library grayed out, but over the thumbnail, you see 'purchase this episode' or 'complete this season of x-show.' Movies - watch, rip, purchase movies *More Movies - find and purchase movies online through the Zune Marketplace, integrated as a Media Center experience. Search by actor, year, title, keyword, genre, director, series, etc. *Movie Library - browse your movie collection purchased/saved to your hard drive as DVD covers, view information, and 'add to queue' to play a series of movies back-to-back. *Search - find a movie based on rating, length, actor, director, series, year, genre, etc. Music - play albums, artists, years, etc. like in media player *Settings - here you can check your albums to make sure the album art is correct, etc. *More Music - music store to purchase music, with recommendations based on your current library. *Music Library - sort by album, artist, etc. *Play All - plays all music *Radio - if you have a radio tuner on the PC, you can hear those station here. *Internet Radio - if a station streams online, it will show here *Search - find music in your library. After searching, if there is a new album by, say, the Cardigans, a link under the library will show "Buy the new Cardigans album 'Erase and Rewind'" which takes you to the music store to try it out and purchase it. Podcasts - get your podcasts organized here *Settings - change when to delete podcasts, when to download, etc. *More Podcasts - get more podcasts from the online directory of *Podcast Library - view downloaded podcasts by name (thumbnail view) *Download Status - see what is downloading and what's in queue to download *Search - find a podcast (you can rename this ZENcast if you use a ZEN...) Sports - same as now. I don't really use it much. Online Media - find new plug-ins and mini-games, etc. Kind of like games for iPod, since a Media Center is supposed to be a social computer. *More Programs - search online database for new miniprograms for VMC. Most are free, 50 cents, or 99 cents *Program Library - mini-programs you downloaded *Explore - internet based content based on your preferences (tv, movies, music you own), by content providers *Learn How - how to do things within VMC Tasks - backend tasks to add content, change settings, etc. *Settings - change settings for menus, how content is arranged, etc. You can change TV Series backgrounds to cast photos, for example. *Shutdown *Burn CD/DVD - create your own music or video CD/DVD. Pick from content in your library, *Sync - add podcasts, shows, music to your portable media player *Add Extender - Media Center finds and configures your Media Extender on the network *Add Network Storage - VMC finds a network storage device and integrates it into your library. If your files there aren't tagged, you can choose to tag them as well. *Add Codec - here you can see the files that are missing the necessary codec to play correctly within VMC, and you can download a codec, have VMC install it, then ask, 'do you want to play these files?' *Media Only - locks computer into VMC for use while you've got company That's how I'd arrange and upgrade Vista Media Center.     - Dish Network DVR I have a Vista Computer with a TV Tuner card and a Dish625 DVR. When I set up Media Center I connected the DVR to the computer with an S video cable and standard audio cables. I can watch and record TV but the IR sensor does not recognize my DVR and I cannot change channels trough Media Center. If I set up Media Center to use a rooftop antenna everything works properly so ther equipment is not defective. There was a patch for this problem with other brand boxes for XP Media Center but I can't find one for Vista. Any suggestions?     - Vista media player playlist I am unable to create any play lists since installing Vista on my computer. When I try to create a play list, I get a message telling me that windows has encountered a problem, click here for assistance. I am then given the error code of "COODOFFI" and that is it. Symptoms: 1) When the laptop is booted, the wallpaper will display but no icons or taskbar is present. 2) We can press ctrl-alt-del and get taskmanager. 3) From Task manager we can run Explorer.exe. 4) The machine works as normal. We have already checked: 1) ALL Microsoft updates are applied. 2) The event log doesnt give any errors. 3) Machine is free of spyware and viruses. 4) A new user account was created and it does the same thing. 5) Reintslling SP2 did not solve the issue. 5) An in-place upgrade of XP Media center edition did not solve the issue.     - Digital Cable Tuner on Non-DCT Computer I have a DCT capable computer with 3 DCT's on it. Unfortunately, despite what I have read on-line about how to connect it and modify the registry, I have not been able to run with 3 DCT's. So I was thinking. What would happen if I hooked the DCT up to one of my other Vista computer with Media Center. Would it work for everything but networks like HBO and ESPN? Or would it not work at all.     - XP MCE Boot problem Doing my first real computer build and I guess I'm rusty on how to get the Windows CD to boot. Purchased Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. however I guess the CD-Rom doesn't recognize it as a bootable. I've update both the bios and the harddrive with the appropriate software from CD's I made on another computer and the new build recognized both just fine. I've also selected the CD as the boot disk in the bios. The screen just says to load a CD and press a key but the CD's are already there. And, pressing the key again just gets the same respons. I'm using 2 computers with exactly the same version of Vista Ultimate, one
is a very old computer using for testing purpose and the other a new one.
I've buy a pinnacle TV tuner stick Hybride.
During the configuration on MediaCenter after having select country, the old
pc ask for which signal I want tu use : Cable, Satellite or Antenna. I have
to select Cable and It find all channels.
On the new one it doesn't ask me and select Antenna (analog) by default so I
get only 3 channels.... How can I force asking me the signal... I've lost
some hours to restart the configuration, but always the same...

i have the same problem but opposite i cannot switch to analoge the is a
hotfix for analogue to digital id:929011that should work for you i am waiting
to find out if will work the oppisite way for me
