Hi Forum Members:

I have Windows XP Media Center 2005(2). My system is only 18 months old and
I have spent most of that time fixing the "sonic encoders" within Media
Center. I have Version 1 and they are extremely unstable and not very
reliable.

Sonic Encoders are only available to OEMs and Dell Technical Staff have
absolutely "no clue" on what they are, how to fix or repair, etc.

I've had to do several clean install (lost track over 10 in the past year)
and several "repairs" to the Operating System in order to things working
again. Since Christmastime, Microsoft Security Updates have been affecting
my Operating System as well. In particular, the Internet Explorer, Media
Center and other software?!

The Create DVD portion of Media Center freezes and won't go past 2-3%. The
Event Logs state "sonic burn error" but I don't see that error message at
all???

Any suggestions on how to fix this continuous problem or an MCE Plug-in that
would work in place of the "Sonic Encoders".

thanks,

kattails

I use Nero 7 to do what you want (I'm sure 8 will do it too).

It has plugins that do the same thing as Sonicencoders (ie work from within
MCE).

Having said that, I don't use those plugins. I use the Nero Vision 4 part of
Nero, outsdie of MCE, to top/tail & cut out ads, add chapters and a menu page
and author a pukka DVD.

I would say it is 2-3 times as fast as Sonicencoders and far, far more
reliable.

You can download a trial verson from their website.

SonicEncoders sucks big time. I went to great effort to get it working,
tried it once (using a DVD-RW fortunately) and was so disappointed I never
used it again.

Many people have problems getting it working at all, and even when you do,
it will often falsely claim there is not enough space available.

For an alternative that can be accessed (like SonicEncoders) using the '10
foot' user interface, have a look at CyberLinks' MakeDVD2 (now MakeDisc3).

See http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/compare_97_ENU.html

Personally, when I want to produce a DVD I do it externally to Media Center.

I know, I've been pulling my hair out with the "Sonic Encoders".

I like Nero, I've used an OEM version of Nero 6, however, it doesn't include
NeroVision. I can upgrade to 7 or 8 by purchasing.

I agree that the best way to handle the "Sonic Encoders" is to use Media
Center to record only and any other work like editing, etc. should be done
outside of it.

I will also look at MakeDVD2 or MakeDisc3. I'll have to experiment, like
you said, with different trial versions.

Any other suggestions that Forum Members have used successful -- let me know.

Thanks,
