    - Why is Auto Playlist repeated many times? Hi I'm using Vista Media Center. For some reason I'm getting the Auto Playlists in the Music Library 3 times. I have 3 times of All Music, All Pictures, All Videos, Music added in the last month, and so on. This seems to be for all auto playlists. Anyone have any ideas about why this is and how to fix it?     - ATSC physical channels incorrectly set to post-transiton channels Recently (March 17 or thereabouts) Microsoft changed atscchannels.xml in my area so that the physical channels of three local channels KCTS, KSTW and KWPX point to their POST-transition channels.     - Cable TV signal setup problems Hello, When I try to watch live TV using Media Center the picture is horrible. It is hard to make out what is going on and the picture flips across the screen. It looks almost as if something is set to the wrong channel. The audio is fine. I have gone through the setup numerous times. My cable tv is directly connected to the tuner card in my Dell XPS 410. I tried going through the setup and telling it I had a satellite or set-top tuner. Through these options it let me try 3 different channels for signal. Channel 2 looked like what I see, channel 3 looked much better but a bit fuzzy, channel 4 had no signal. Unfortunately, though, as this is not the correct setup for my direct cable connection I have to abort because it keeps telling me IR hardware not dtected. This used to work fine. Somewhere along the line the picture went and I just figured maybe something was wrong with the cable itself. It is definitely not the cable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - Pie in the sky! I may be behind the curve on this but... How about developing an open standard for controlling STBs via RS232, or IP? A standard that will allow MCE to truely talk to STBs and other media devices, sending direct commands and determining STB status, using something like streamed XML? This wouldn't just help MCE, but the Audio/Video industry as well. Then you can get around all this IR/UHF/STB frustration.     - Function Keys on Remote Different STBs require different methods of interaction depending on their state, and MCE has no way of knowing the state of the STB. For example, my dish network STB resets every night, so I have to hit OK to turn it on. There is no way to do this via MCE, so somedays MCE just records a screen saver from the STB. Solutions1: Allow automation IR scripts to be run before a recording event. A script can consist of recorded IR sequences that are played back to the STB before a recording takes place. Solutions2: Add function buttons (eg F1,F2,F3) to the remote, and have the ability to have the function modes mapped to different IR commands. Therefore I could config F1 to map keys to IR commands specifically for the STB. Then if my STB gets out of Sync I can put MCE into F1 mode by hitting the key, and use my remote just like the STB remote to synch up the STB. This also opens the possibilty for mapping to other devices like SoundSystems. Solutions3: Just for the sake of throwing something else out there, how about an IR blaster that truely Blasts! All I can find are mini blasters that require a Bug to be taped over the STB eye. Kind of tacky to say the least. If I can control my TV from acrss the room, I should be able to have an IR blaster that can work from across the room.     - Frustration with STB / IR and MCE in general Problem: Can't block channels. Even if I hide a channel in the guide, I can still access it directly using the remote. This means if I fat-finger the channel I can end up on one not supported by my STB subscription, therefore ending up on a menu that I can't get out of becuase.... MCE won't transmit my already mapped "OK" signal to the STB.     - Vista Media Center unwanted folders After installing SP1 Media Center started listing the memory card reader slots as 4 drives in both the Video and Pictures libraries. These were never configured to be monitored in either MC or WMP and they weren't being listed in Media Center before SP1 was installed.     - Windows Movie Maker I have created a movie in Movie Maker 5.1 and when I try to save it as a movie in higher quality/size, it saves just like normal... gives me the estimated time, etc. and says it is finished, but when I view the movie, it plays for a while and then gets "stuck" on a picture and stays there while the music continues in the background. I have tried various saving options and the only ones that it will save the entire movie on are very small and the video quality is very bad. In all the different saves I have tried, it gets stuck on a different picture each time so I know it is not a particular picture that is the problem.     - BDA driver and MS Windows MCE Hello, I have a problem with developing BDA driver for MS MCE. First thing I did was to compile a BDA sample from MS DDK. This sample works in MS XP perfectly, but when I try to use this BDA driver in MCE it doesn't work I'm trying to run Media Center in MCE and this application can't find this BDA sample driver to receive TV.     - Keyboard shortcut to Search (TV) Probably an obvious one, but is there a keyboard shortcut combination to 'Search'? I find the 'Search' option for the TV+Movies category extremely useful (in Media Center on Vista Home Premium) but the best I can currently come up with is Ctrl-O {Alt+Winkey+Enter} {right arrow 4 times} {Enter} which isn't particularly rememberable or user-friendly.     - Colour ajustment I view XP Media Centre 2005 through a standard CRT PAL TV or a 720P projector. Up until I got the HTPC I watched the TV with a digital tuner signal (UK Freeview) via a SCART plug. When using the HTPC with Media centre it goes through S Video to the TV or projector. The picture looks fine on both from the digital receiver but is far too intensely coloured from the PC but I can't find any way of adjusting the intensity of the colour from within Media centre. I have tried a couple of the different "Color Profiles" available on the PC but they don't seem to make enough of a difference. It is more than somewhat annoying to look at this very unrealistic picture. Is there anyway to adjust the colour to be more realistic within Media centre or the PC?     - OE emails remain in Out folder .... and will not move to Sent folder. Recipients report the emails are being sent multiple times even though I have not pressed send/receive that many times. I noted a large number of emails in the Sent folder (3400+ and have that down to about 2700 to make sure there is room in the folder to receive emails from the Out folder.     - Upgrade from 2004 to 2005 I would very much like to be able to install Windows Media Player 11 on my PC (so I can watch streaming movies from Netflix on the new monitor I just bought). Unfortunately WMP 11 does not work on WinXP MCE 2004. The manufacturer of my PC tells me there is nothing they can do to upgrade my system to MCE 2005 (and that I should just buy a new PC). However, I have seen references on this site to upgrading from MCE 2004 to MCE 2005. Can anyone shed some light on this apparent contradiction? And if one can upgrade from 2004 to 2005, how is that done? Would a product recovery disc do it (meaning, could I use a recover disc for WinXP MCE 2005 to convert my operating system from 2004 to 2005)? Thanks, Rob.     - How do we stop the echo in WLM 8.5 when teleconferencing? Ever since Messenger was upgraded many of us have experienced a nasty echo that makes using the conferencing feature impossible. This did not used to be, and simply using headphones is not the answer, so please don't even suggest it. This has to be a bug in Windows Live Messenger 8.5, and possibly 8.1. I did not experience this echo in previous versions, so I'm pretty sure it is not a hardware issue. What needs to be fixed? We have tried all settings and nothing stops it.     - ownership issue Please help! I had my computer in safe mode and was logged in as administrator. I was having trouble accessing the history folder in local settings so i took ownership of the folder, now i can access it but now my computer isnt recording the history. there is nothing in the folder and when i view it with the internet up there is nothing there not even icons for the date. normally i would just use system restore but for some reason it was turned off.     - Suddendly issue with Program Guide Update.. Hi, suddendly I cannot longer update the Program Guide, as I could since the install of Vista. I have tried everything, my ADSL is fine, but I got an error code 4 "could not establish a connection" I can see all TV program and all Media Center works fine, except updating the Grogran Guide. Even when I try to reconfigure the internet connection in MC Vista Ultimate, it still says that the connection does not work. My firewall is off and nothing should prevent this feature to work like it always did. Can you help me please. I have cable TV with a Pinnacle Vista card which works perfectly.     - XP Media Center 2005 Away Mode Ok, so I may be posting in the wrong forum, but I could not find a Media Center specific group. I am running XP Media Center 2005 w/ all windows and driver updates, on a Dell Dimension E520, 2.66 GHZ Dual-core Pentium D, 1 GB RAM 2 internal SATA 250 GB/300 GB hard drives. GeForce 7300 LE 256 MB vid card (which is strangely shown pretty much everywhere in the system as having 512 MB though??) Anyhow, I reinstalled Windows some time ago with the CD instead of the factory image restore from the hidden partition. No problems, everything installed, working properly, and showing properly (except the vid card's memory) Quite a few months later bought the 300 GB drive to install, and after installation I noticed an unknown device in device manager. The hard drive is installed and working properly at this point, after some testing etc. the unknown device is definitely NOT the hard drive. I checked the properties of the unknown device checked out and searched the hardware strings on the details tab, and have come up with it's the Media Center Away Mode driver. From what I can tell searching, I can literally find nothing fruitful about how to fix this problem with the away mode driver. There is no away mode tab in Power Options either. I don't necessarily need the functionality of away mode, but I would like to get rid of this annoying entry in my device manager without uninstalling or disabling it.     - Why is Media Ctr remote full screen? Recently purchased HP Media Ctr (MC) PC with Vista Home Premium on it with a TV Tuner/FM Radio card. It also came with a Media Ctr Remote. The sticker on inside of remote's battery door says Model TSGH-IR01 SW rev.A How do I get the remote to open or leave the MC window in a small window in lower right corner of screen, which is where I have it set to open when I open/operate MC commands with the mouse? If I open the MC with the remote (say the Radio) it always opens full screen! Even if I open the MC in TV mode by mouse but then want to change to Radio mode using remote the MC goes to full screen. Is there a way to "shrink" the full screen to the my normal small window using some remote button? Is there some type of operational manual for this remote?     - Computer Rebooting Automatically Hello, My computer has started rebooting itself over the last month, and it's been getting more frequent. It seems to happen when a decent load is applied. I thought it may have been a heat issue, but I got it to restart even when a fan was blowing into the tower. I have updated the drivers that I could, voltages seem to be fine, and have recently formatted and reinstalled Windows. Another forum has recommended running memtest86, which I will do as soon as I can, but I have swapped 3 different memory sticks, and it happens with each. Here is the error code for the most recent event: Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 00000000, parameter3 b7377870, parameter4 00000000.     - Medion Laptop and watching TV Hi, As a real newbie to Vista, I have just bought a Medion Laptop with a DVB-T Tuner Express Card54, and Digital Aerial. I have tried many times to set up the tuner to watch TV but don't seem to get anywhere. I am not an experienced computer whizz, but neither am I a complete novice. I live in the mountains of Sth West Wales, UK, and we don't get digital TV as we can't get a good Ch 5 signal and we get really bad recetion on Analogue reception (we have to pay for Sky to even get a decent picture). So I assume that is why I can't get Digital on the Laptop? I am wondering if I should be able to get Analogue TV using this TV Card? I have tried to connect my Analogue roof aerial to the laptop, but still no TV. I have tried to get Digital TV at my mother-in-laws house but still no joy (she is in an area that can get digital). I can understand that I may not be able to get digital here where I live, but can't understand why I can't get anything in an are where I know that you can get it. I suppose I just want to know really if the TV Card is working as it is a new laptop, but don't know what else to do. Any advice will be gratefully received. Regards, Dalavon.     - record to external hard drive I have installed an external hard drive and mapped it with a drive letter in windows explorer. I read several post on using an external hard drive but have not been able to get Media Center to record directly to the external drive. I was able to list the drive in the WatchedFolders string in registry but not able to list the external drive in the RecordPath string. Is there a precise way to list the external drive?     - Choppy Audio/Video HELLPP! So I've had my Gateway dual-core for a year or so now, but even fresh out of the box from Costco, video is super choppy. Unwatchable. Audio CDs same thing. Skips everytime the light on the drive blinks. However, it only happens on audio or video FROM CD or DVD. Audio/Video from tv or saved on the cpu play fine. Hard to call it a media center if I can't play any CDs or DVDs. This unit came with other players like "PowerDVD" and "DVD Solution", etc. Could these be the problem? Is it the drive itself? Hopefully just a simple toggle somewhere? BTW, I have over 100 GB of free space; don't think that is an issue. SOMEBODY SAVE ME BEFORE I THROW THE DAMN THING OUT THE WINDOW! Thanks...     - MCE not working at all, XP Patch to blame? My MCE has been down for quite a while. Most of the functions and programs work but the MCE part does not. I can't even open The MCE When I try to have my XBOX connect as an extender, it doesn't work anymore. It says something about not finding the MCE. I've tried checking which services are running and not running but cannot find what is wrong. I may have downloaded an XP patch (update) and updated. Restoring has not worked.     - Best practices for using media center on a PC/TV combination setti Question: While I can "make it work", I am not happy with the usability aspects of my setting and I am asking the community to show me the best way to get the best experience overall from my media center PC. Setup: 1. I got a m9100t (HP) with ATSC-NTSC TV tuner with PVR + remote, and a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT, TV-out, DVI-I, HDMI 2. I have Wall Antenna to splitter, one end to PC one end to TV 3. I have HDMI from PC to TV 4. I have DVI-VGA to PC monitor 5. I have 35mm audio from PC to Monitor speaker 6. I have Digital audio from PC to Receiver Problems: Video: The video can be set so that I have both monitors "cloned", or each one individually configured and one is primary and one is secondary. Cloned is out because then both need to have the same resolution, so that is not good. But if I set the PC as primary and TV as secondary, then I need to "drag" the media center from the PC screen to the TV. I guess that is ok, but will I always have to drag that thing back an forth? The real thing I am looking for is, is there an easy and fast way to switch PC and TV like you can in a laptop (alt F5). It seems very hard to go to the screen properties and configure it from there if I want to change primary and secondary. Why do I change primary and secondary? for example, if I run picassa, and I in picassa run the slideshow, it will always run on the primary screen, so even if I drag picasa to the TV, the slide show will open on the PC!!!! Sound: It seems the sound configuration has a "default" defined. So when the default is the PC speakers, the audio goes there even if I play media center or anything for that matter on the PC monitor or on the TV. the only way I manged to hear the audio on my receiver was to change the default to the digital out. But BTW, that change does nothing (audio still comes from the monitor) until you close and re open media center (or WMP). I expected it to either play both audio streams from both outputs, or at least give me a EASY way to switch... if this was not clear, please ask me for more info.     - New Software in Set Top Box makes my IR bug emit a ZERO 1st after reprograming it. How to undo ZERO? MCE 2005 MVPs? I have a Dell 9150 MCE 2005 XP Pro .. been using, building, computers since 1983... Time Warner Cable just CHANGED the software for my STB~! SO, I had to redo the setup to get MCE 2005 to recognize it. Now, the IR bug transmits a ZERO before the Channel Number. This is ignored when the channel number has up to 3 digits BUT I have a FOUR Digit Channel Span. And it totally confuses the STB with 4 digit numbers. The ZERO is transmitted first, then there is a pause and then the rest of the numbers are transmitted. I get these results through the "auto" setup.. S-Video in, etc... I TRIED the manual setup but it crashes. I have posted a registry patch which puts MCE 2005 directly into Dolby 5.1 mode. Many people complained setting soundcards crashes the Setup Prg in MCE 2005. Is there a reg patch to get it to stop prefacing my Channel Numbers with a ZERO in MCE 2005?     - Hi Def wmv clips My short hi def home movies play fine on my P4 machine using XP MCE. Media center and MP 10 both play them. But I bought a new desktop (because I was having trouble editing and rendering my longer hd movies with Pinnacle Studio). The new computer won't even play the short hd movies using the Vista MC or MP11. They're real jerky and the sound doesn't sync. The new specs: HP d4999t with Intel core 2 quad Q6700 @ 2.66GHz and 4MB ram running Vista home premium 32 bit. NVidia GeForce 8600GT with 512MB connected with HDMI to a Vizio 37" lcd tv. This problem continues even after I installed Vista SP1 today. Earlier I was flamed on an NVidia newsgroup for suggesting it was the card. Someone said it must be a missing codec. But I've heard of terrible problems installing codecs on Vista computers. Any ideas? I haven't started tweaking Vista per http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html or http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.html or http://vista-tricks-tips.blogspot.com/ Since I got the vista computer, I've been trying to get rid of the bloatware and reduce the number of scheduled tasks (19 of them but I can't figure out what half of them are) because they always interrupt my tv recordings with MC. If I disable the task scheduler only then will it record a tv program every time without interruption. I'm also still trying to figure out which processes I can close or kill (without causing a computer shutdown) out of the several dozen that run on startup, so that I will be able to edit and render movies when my Pinnacle Studio 11 that I ordered on 2/28 finally gets here. I guess I digressed or went on a tangent or something. For now I just want to know if anyone knows how to smoothly run a windows media (.wmv) file with 1440 x 1080 dimensions and a 5234 kbps bit rate in Vista MC or MP11.     - Remote Desktop Media center control Hello, I have a vista ultimate media center pc in my living room with all of my media on it. It is connected to a stereo that plays throughout the entire house. I have a laptop with vista ultimate and have tried to remote desktop login to the media center to allow me to change music and such from any location in the house (or by the pool). It seems that media center will stop and play directly on the laptop. Is it possible to control the media pc music selection remotely with the music still playing on the host pc? Thanks for any help.     - Digital SubChannels Does anyone know when MS (or someone) will provide digital TV subchannel listings. All the programs I want to record are on the subchannels. e.g. 58.3 in the LA area.     - Weird Decoder Error problem - please help :( Hi, First off, this isn't the usual noob issue of not having any MPEG2 decoders installed! :) Basically, I have a freshly reinstalled machine on which I'm using the latest NVidia Purevideo decoders. Live TV plays fine, as do recorded programmes. The issue I have is that, if I'm watching a recorded programme and press the Live TV button, I get the dreaded Decoder Error screen and the only way I can then watch live TV again is if I close the MCE interface and reopen it. If, however, whilst watching a recorded programme, I click the Guide button and then immediately click OK, all is fine, despite this doing exactly the same as pressing the Live TV button. Essentially, it's ONLY the Live TV button on the remote which causes the error to appear - weird or what! I also get this if I'm watching xvid/divx material via My Videos and a third party decoder such as xvid or ffdshow. I've also seen the error when using ffdshow for mpeg2 material with the nvidia decoders uninstalled (ffdshow does work despite the checkup gizmo saying otherwise) which leads me to believe it's nothing to do with the nvidia decoders per se but rather an internal MCE issue.     - Explorer Horizontal slider moves all the way to the right I have a client whose Windows XP Pro SP2 Explorer opens and moves his view all the way to the right in any view. The slider moves all the way to the right and sticks there like it is the default. By that, I mean, he can drag it to the left, but it does not stay where he leaves it - it pops back to the right. This happern when he opens any instance of explorer, whether in Word Perfect, Printers and Faxes or simply Explorer. He is an attorney and has several hundred folders under another folder. We changed his view to Detailed View so that he can scroll down the list, but that is NOT the solution. I ran McAfee's Stinger v.3.80 and came up clean. He has Trend Micro Client/Server Security 7.2 installed and has no reports of infection.     - Degraded image quality when routed via MCE I have a HD projector which supports 1280x768 resolution and 1080i for HDTV. It has DVI-I and HDMI inputs (amongst others). If I display jpeg images (greater than 1280x768) directly from a computer via the DVI-I input, the picture quality is excellent. If I display the same images using Windows Media Center and a Linksys DMA-2200 MCE via the HDMI input (1080i) the picture quality is degraded and looks distinctly 'soft'. Satellite HDTV (1080i) pictures fed via HDMI are spectacular - they look as good as the 1280x768 still images. Why do images fed via the Windows Media Center/Extender appear 'soft'.     - Media Center: No TV option in Settings I am trying to set up a Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro Stick on an Acer laptop. The laptop OS is Vista Home Premium. I already have the same Pinnacle on my HP laptop (same OS). The big difference is that on the Acer, when I go to Media Center, Tasks, Settings, there is no option for setting TV options.     - Setup Networked Storage on Windows Media Player and DVR Howdy, So far the Media Share on the DVR works fine with networked computers local files. Also music and photo media on the networked disk are shared by the computers' WMP. I need to migrate to the much larger capacity networked hard disk. The NAS is a mapped drive set to WMP's library and monitored folders on Vista machines. Yet using the network attached storage via the DVR's media share is another story. Via the DVR, selecting Music or Photo -> folders yields "... no files in this folder". Any files stored on the computers local drives are playable via the DVR, but not files from the NAS. Turning on the NAS media server lists folders/paths and in one case down to the song name. The song listing includes an X indicating not usuable and zero time duration. Media on the NAS are stored in a public folder. Also tried some media in a public user account. The wireless router is set to enable multicast streams. Wonder if that's necessary on a D-Link DIR-655. Are there any special parameters to set in Vista to enable the DVR media share to use the NAS succesfully? The Windows Media Player help page describes how to adjust settings for networked computers to share but not sure if it includes anything for a NAS.     - Unable to download Guide Have had my MCE disabled for a while and decided to fire it back up again. Went to the guide and set it up for my zip code 80136 and it downloaded the providers (antenna) and then stalls at about 5% or so done. certain way on the desktop so that I know where they are. Users can
rearrange and/or added icons to the desktop. However, how can I have the
setting set back to the way they were when the Users have log off?
