When I try to run Live TV or play an old Recording in my XP MCE 2005, it just
shows a red screen while audio plays smoothly.
The same recorded videos play properly in Windows Media Player.
I think this happened after I installed an update which sounded something
like KB089250 "Rollup for Update Rollup 2" on Nov 4.
Once I got a weird error about ehshell.exe that I reported to Microsoft
which suggested that it was due to Intel's Graphics Card.
I did a system restore to an earlier date, but the problem persists.
I have an Intel GMA 900 onboard graphics card on my 915GV motherboard. My TV
Tuner is Hauppauge WinTV 88X.

Now I am afraid of re-installing the updates. Help!
Thanks...

It sounds like a dvd decoder problem, do you have "Win Dvd" installed?
I have seen old "Win Dvd" decoders do this.

Rollup 2 was a big update from a long time ago
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900325). It caused a lot of problems at the
time. These have largely gone away, partly as a result of subsequent updates
from MS and partly by users updating their drivers for their main components
(eg display card, tuner card etc) from the manufacturer's site.

If you still have the problem, I'd bite the bullet and use Windows update to
bring down and install all the updates, so your PC is fully up to date. Then,
if you still have the problem, I'd update your drivers. I think the problem
will probably have been resolved, and you'll be up to date. Even if not, you
won't be any worse off than you are now....... :(

I doubt it is an old version of WinDVD - I use WinDVD5 with no problem. That
said, it is worth checking if you can playa DVD - if you can't, reinstall
your DVD decoder. You may find it useful to check what decoder you have and
make sure it is marked as prefered, using this -

Thanks for replying Eric.
Here's a few things:

I'd installed update Rollup 2 long ago, and all was fine. What I just
installed was a new "Update Rollup for Update Rollup 2". It may be
that this requires me to update my Video Card, but I can't do that
'coz when I tried so a year ago (from the Intel website),
my video memory reduced from 64 to 32MB! (I rolled back)

I tried that Checker you suggested, it showed me that my nVidia
decoder is compatible with MCE (though not with MP10's synchro
feature, which I don't bother about anyway).

It seems I'll have to bite the bullet as you say,
go and do the Windows update once again.
Tell me if you have any other ideas...
Thanks again.

That the problem you only have 32 MB for your Video, you 64MB or higher I
would go with 128MB video Card DirectX9 card

If you have onboard Video, you may be able to go into BIOS and set the Video
memory to 128 MB.

Be aware if you do have onboard video, the amount of memory you allocate to
Video reduces the amount of available RAM for other programs.

Sorry Richard, that's surely not the problem!

Initially my onboard memory was 64MB, and after I upgraded my RAM to 1.25GB,
my video memory became 92MB and has stayed so. Media Center used to run
perfectly fine and fast.

As I said, everything started after installing the update KB908250.
(Misspelt it earlier). Has anyone else installed this update and faced
problems with it?
The other weird thing is that after I restored my system, which effectively
uninstalled the update, why does the problem persist?

Thanks for the suggestion though, Richard and Carl.
