Hi,

I was told in a different group I could not use a MCE product key to
activate a system installed from a Home edition DVD, so now I'm going for
installing my OEM MCE and remove the media functions afterwards.

Does anybody know if I can shut down the MC services and uninstall the
components, or simply remove MC files, folders and registry entries without
jeopardizing the stability of the OS? What can and what can't I remove.

If you don't have a TV tuner installed and you never run the MCE setup
wizard you have esentially XP Home. None of the extra services should be
running if you never set them up. If you try to remove or alter MCE in
anyway you will probably have some issues.

Just install the OS and use it like you would use XP home or Pro.

Thanks for the reply, B.D. Is there nothing at all I can remove to free up
disk space?

I'm sure you meant to say "you never run the MCE setup wizard you have
essentially XP PRO".
The MCE services ARE running whether you ever run the MCE app or not, they
need to be disabled using services.msc, there is also a startup item in the
registry.

Yep, and that's what I was wondering of. So far I've stopped and disabled
the services, no problems. Do you think I can safely delete reg entries as
well? After backing them up, of course.

I do not think it would be a good idea to delete the registry entries.
MCE is so integrated into the OS, deleting registry entries might cripple
Windows.

If you want a real Windows XP Professional OS, you would need to actually
install Windows XP Professional.

So I feared. I'll watch my step, and maybe remove the start up entries with
CCleaner.

Don't need XP Pro, just want to free up the system resources MC hogs.

If it's not doing anything especially if you stop all the eh* services then it doesn't hog any
resources.
