My son has recently re-installed Windows XP on my PC due to a major failure.
Unfortunately he called the PC David. That was my previous user name. Now I
can not use that user name and can not gain access to my previous password
protected files. Can I re-name the computer or access the files without
re-installing Windows?

You can rename the computer easy enough.

But if your son did a clean install, all of your previous information is
gone.

Ask your son what he did. Maybe he backed up the information for you.

Start > Control Panel > System.
On the Computer Name Tab click the Change button.
Type the new name, OK.

That probably will not get you access to your old passwords.

There is a Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP.

To open the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, click Start, point to All
Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Files
and Settings Transfer Wizard.
