Recording when hooked up to Dish network

I have only had my media center for about 2 weeks. I think I have all the
right things hooked up. I went through the wizard and have all the stuff
hooked up. I watch live tv just fine.
The problem I am having is with the recording. I can set it up to record
two programs. But when the program comes up to record, it only records what I
am watching on my regular tv. I have gone through the changing channels and
it does that correctly. It wont record only what is on my regular tv. If my
dish box is turned off, it will only record the away message that dish
network has on. I have read everything and search all over trying to find an
answer for this and I cant, so I thought I would throw it at you and see if
you can help me with this.
I must say, I do have the dish network box with the DVR in it, will this
prohibit me from recording on my media center?
All I have been able to do is record directly what I am watching, nothing
that I have scheduled that would have to be on a different channel.

It sounds like your Dish network box has only one tuner/recvr. Of course it
could not record something other than what you are watching. You are
preempting it's recording by setting the DVR channel where you want it, not
where MC wants it.

It also sounds like the IR bug attached to your DVR from MC is not quite
right. When your DVR receives the channel change from MC it would tune to
the correct channel and the 'away' message would go away.

Take a moment to think about how it really works, not how you want it to
work, which is not possible.
