I have noticed that many people record TV shows. They are then
uploaded to the web or the newsgroups or even the bit torrent sites.
The shows look great and what I have seen is that they are almost
always maybe 99% of them Xvid or Dvix format. Does anyone know how
this is done? Can this be done in Vista Media Center? I thought that
VMCE only recorded in the dreaded dvr-ms format. If I am wrong can
anyone show me how to record in Xvid or Dvix via VMCE. If it is not
done via VMCE then I would still like to know how it is done and/or
what program they are using.

As usual thanks in advance...

MCE always uses the dvr-ms format, although there is nothing "dreaded" about
it; it is just a standard mpeg format with special "wrapper" to keep track
of attritional show information.

You can either use a program to convert the dvr-ms to some other format or
use a different TV recording program that allows recording in a different
format. Most tuner cards come with their own mfr's recording software, for
example, my Hauppauge tuner came with WinTV2000. It isn't a full "Media
Center" environment, but it allows pausing/rew/FF/etc. and recording in a
variety of formats and resolution.

DVR-MS files can be easily converted to other formats. Crunchie will convert to
DivX automatically

Thanks I heard that there were some problems with audio being missing
and commercial skipping not working.

Really? Maybe I should look into Crunchie then. The MCE machine I put
mcebuddy onto was for my mother. I'll have to see how it's been doing.

I haven't tried crunchy yet but heard good things. The coversion part
generally works good on most it is the commercial skipping that is
mediocre at best.
