I have been getting conflicting comments on this problem. Which DVD type and
manufacturer do I use to be able to not only burn, but playback on a stand
alone dvd player. The latest I was told to use was Memorex DVD-RW. I can burn
easy enough but will only play back on the computer, not any other dvd player.

I am using an XPS 400 with Windows XP Media Center 2005.

If someone has a definitive answer to this problem I would be greatly
appreciative.

Thank for any and all help.

There is no definitive answer. What type of disk (+ or -) is dictated by the
DVD player you want to use, not all of them support both, some support
neither. It's trial and error as far as what brands of disks work well with
a given DVD player.

The greatest likelyhood of burning a DVD that will play on stand-alone
players is a Closed DVD-R or DVD+R. There is a special format the DVD must
be in to play in players.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-Video

I have no experience using Windows Media Center to burn a Video to DVD, I
have however created DVDs that play just fine in stand-alone players, using
a combination of a Video Editor (PowerDirector is one) and Nero DVD burning
software.

Nero has a video editor in the suite.
The name is Nero Vision.

Each type of disk has a booktype field associated with it. If you burn a
+RW the disk will be identified a +RW which many standalone player will not
recognize. The same is true for +R and -R disk.

If you use a program like Nero you can change the disk booktype. I use +R
media and in Nero I can set the booktype to DVD-ROM, and that has worked on
every PC-DVD and standalone DVD player I have tried for the past serveral
years.

There are other tools that you can use the default booktype just do a
search. If you own a Lite-On drive check there site I believe there is a
utility that allows you to set the booktype.
