The problem started about a week ago. Turned the PC on, try to check my email
and it basically timed out and got an error message that it could not connect
with my ISP mail server.

Called my ISP (Time Warner and I have the digital package with TV, phone and
cable internet...Roadrunner) and they said the connection looks good on their
end. We tried a few things, reboot the modem, uninstall and reinstall both
network cards and it worked for a few minutes and then nothing.

The only way I can get a connection to check my email or brouse is to go
into the Control Panel, then into Network Connections, highlight my LAN
connection icon and click "repair this connection". It goes through the
repair and I have a connection for about 2 minutes.

I also tried a system recovery back to a known date...a date when I new my
PC was OK....no change. I tried downloading an updated driver for the LAN
card...still no change.

I bought some support from HP (my PC manufacturer) and after much time and
attempted fixes, he told me I would have to do a full system recovery. I hate
like hell to have to back everything up and wipe the slate clean and start
over.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jags.

OS?

Doesn't the cable modem have lights to show whether or not it is connected?
If so, that should help decide if it is the cable or your PC.

Tried updating the drivers for the NIC?

You have multiple NICs in the system?

Got a spare NIC around you could install?

Sorry. I guess I forgot a few details.

OS - XP Media Center Edition
Lights on the cable modem indicate I am "online"

Wired or wireless LAN? If wired, is there a router between your PC and the
cable modem? If Wireless, how many other wireless networks are around you
with comparable signal strengths? If wireless, try a different channel on
your router. For 802.11b/g, 1, 6 and 11 are the only channels that aren't
shared. Most routers default to channel 6, so try changing to 1 or 11 on
the router.

You don't happen to have Norton AV or NIS installed do you? If so remove it
and see if the problem goes away.
